Date: Sat, 2 Jun 2001 05:06:41 -0600 (MDT) From: Jack Dembicky Subject: 3.5m Night Log 20010601 [Note: I fudged the time accounts here pretty extensively, with approval from ELT. Lew Hobbs' target set around 23:00, so he gave some of his time to UW10 for TOO pursuit and the remainder to letting UC04 start early. However, since it was DD04 time and specifically intended for flexibility, I just accounted all of it as used up until 01:00, rather than making cross-institutional swaps. -- RM] APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY 3.5m Telescope Night Log Friday, June 1st, 2001 ACTUAL ASTRONOMER OBSERVER(S) INSTRUMENT START FINISH ------------------------------------------------------------------- D.York K.Billings SPIcam --:-- --:-- L.Hobbs L.Hobbs Echelle 20:10 23:10 C.Stubbs J. Louvers and fans opened at 20:10. Instrument was turned over to Lew at 20:10. I focused the Echelle for Lew and the seeing was found to be about 1.5 arc sec. (airmass=2.26). Lew finished early and donated 30 mins to UW09 for a SN rapid follow-up that peaked last night. The remainder of his time to UC04 (2nd half observers). I imaged the SN in 5 bands with the SDSS filters and the seeing was excellent at 0.75 arc sec in r'! I switched back over to the Echelle at 23:40 and Scott (2nd half observer) took it from there. We did a focus with the Echelle and found the seeing to be 2.16 arc sec. when I focused the instrument. A check of the star used for the track/pterr error correction read about 1.85 arc sec.. We had a minor dust event (just reaching approx 3000 cts) occured around 01:30 when the wind shifted to the N, but it quickly subsided as the wind returned blowing to the E. Everything ran smoothly tonight and the 2nd half observer reported that the auto-guider worked reasonably well at keeping the star in the slit on the echelle. --------------- INSTRUMENT FOCUS LOG ---------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:57 Echelle 151(806) 233 27 19.3/20.5 328 5 nd1 1.45 23:17 SPIcam 50(1521) 266 63 ???/19.3 204 5 r' 0.75 23:23 NA2gdr 996(60996) 266 63 ???/19.3 204 5 none 1.09 00:00 Echelle -6(546) 169 32 18.2/18.8 182 13 clear 2.16 ------------- WEATHER CONDITIONS ------------ Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 17:01 74 18 13 272 (W) 636 Clear none 18:01 71 16 7 330 (NNW) 564 Clear none 19:01 71 16 13 288 (WNW) 550 Clear none 20:01 67 16 4 294 (WNW) 590 Clear none 21:01 67 15 4 327 (NNW) 702 Clear none 22:01 67 15 1 246 (WSW) 732 Clear none 23:01 66 15 6 212 (SSW) 756 Clear none 00:01 65 16 12 179 (S) 1012 Clear none 01:01 63 18 3 257 (WSW) 2895 Clear none 02:01 65 19 6 250 (WSW) 965 Clear none 03:01 64 19 1 257 (WSW) 940 Clear none 04:01 62 20 8 315 (NW) 1027 Clear none 05:01 62 19 4 357 (N) 1079 Clear none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
