The upper right quad amplifier croaked. It took about 5 instrument power cycles but it came back on. The good news is that the temp sensors are working again now! After the Princeton team finished calibrations with GrIm, I opened the dome to cool at 19:55 MDT. From 20:55 to 21:45 GrIm was again with chip problems. Many instrument restarts and ICC restarts as well did not fix it. The chip condition began to deteriorate, 3 quads dead and the 4th questionable, so we removed GrIm from service and switched to DIS. All ran smoothly after that. Dust rose past limits at about 22:25. I switched fan configurations around and we brought dust back to limit. Observing Specialist 2nd Half: Russet McMillan Second half went smoothly, aside from the difficulties of following the focus with the telescope fans off for several hours. The focus went up to +200, then descended back to 0 once the dust dropped and I was able to turn the fans back on. Since all the focus changes were done during observations rather than a dedicated focus run, they aren't listed in the focus log. Seeing ranged from nearly 2 arcsec to just under 1 arcsec during the last two hours of the night. During observations of one target, there were signs of oscillation in an unknown component of the telescope, causing image elongation. This didn't prevent observations, although it did make it difficult to monitor the focus. Other targets in the same part of the sky (with the same wind pattern) showed no trouble. --------------- INSTRUMENT FOCUS LOG ---------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:31 GrIm f/10 -180(1067) -02 82 13.5/14.8 355 3 J 0.62" 21:36 DIS Slit 0(1099) 10 58 12.9/13.4 19 12 none 1.13" ------------- WEATHER CONDITIONS ------------ Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:03 58 18 5 335 (NNW) 1380 clear none 17:03 59 18 13 300 (WNW) 1410 clear none 18:03 61 20 7 277 (W) 1549 clear none 19:03 57 18 4 329 (NNW) 1764 clear none 20:03 54 19 6 307 (NW) 1694 clear none 21:03 55 18 9 7 (N) 1908 clear none 22:03 56 12 6 27 (NNE) 2481 clear none 23:03 53 13 6 22 (NNE) 2531 clear none 00:03 55 13 2 274 (W) 2588 clear none 01:03 55 12 3 257 (WSW) 2315 clear none 02:03 54 14 7 261 (W) 1937 clear none 03:03 53 14 7 257 (WSW) 1654 clear none 04:03 53 12 10 238 (WSW) 1675 clear none 05:03 54 6 10 259 (W) 1574 clear none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
