I worked with Jon Holtzman on measurements of the guider filters for the upcoming upgrade. Wind died enough for us to open at 18:58 MST. The seeing was decent despite the high winds and warm temps. Immediately upon starting, at about 21:15 MST I think, the MC halted and the Obs-2 Mac crashed. I restarted them both and we quickly started another exposure. Final program of first half started without troubles and ran smoothly for remainder of my shift. Observing Specialist, 2nd Shift: Russet McMillan Near the end of first half, the echelle observer had some trouble when a series of commands to pause and then resume the exposure (due to clouds) apparently messed up the echelle's readout time. The exposure was not completely lost, but did have some contamination because the shutter was open at least part of the time when we thought it was closed. The observer quit a little early because he wasn't getting much through the clouds. Second half was also challenged by variable cirrus, sometimes making guiding impossible, but many usable spectra were obtained and the telescope never had to be closed. The seeing (when measurable) was good to moderate (0.7-1.4 arcsec, with a dependence on azimuth in comparison to the wind direction). There were no serious troubles, and I finally managed to diagnose the recent problem we've been having with pointing corrections, so that should become much less of a time sink. --------------- INSTRUMENT FOCUS LOG ---------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM" --------------------------------------------------------------------- 19:04 Echelle +93(-97) 228 57 3.0/4.2 11 19 ND2 1.06 20:01 SPIcam 0(795) 139 60 3.0/3.6 2 11 B 1.04 20:55 Echelle +38(???) 186 56 2.8/3.1 7 13 ND2 1.81 00:30 DISslit 38(695) 49 72 2.5/2.0 24 8 - 0.88 ------------- WEATHER CONDITIONS ------------ Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 39 19 20 17 (NNE) 181 Cirrus none 17:01 38 19 20 22 (NNE) 225 Cirrus none 18:01 39 19 21 13 (NNE) 240 Cirrus none 19:01 37 19 16 3 (N) 217 Cirrus none 20:01 38 20 18 19 (NNE) 198 Cirrus none 21:01 38 20 17 5 (N) 199 Cloudy none 22:01 37 21 14 16 (NNE) 195 Cloudy none 23:01 36 21 24 12 (NNE) 242 ptly cldy none 00:01 36 20 17 13 (NNE) 402 ptly cldy none 01:01 36 20 24 18 (NNE) 241 mstly clr none 02:01 35 20 18 25 (NNE) 277 ptly cldy none 03:01 35 20 7 29 (NNE) 252 cirrus none 04:01 37 17 22 31 (NNE) 135 cirrus none 05:01 39 14 16 31 (NNE) 94 cirrus none 06:01 38 15 24 18 (NNE) 133 mstly clr none 07:01 38 11 19 13 (NNE) 375 mstly clr none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
