Startup went smoothly. No problems until the Adler folks found the motors stuck when trying to move the mirrors on DIS into place. Required a restart, then all moved fine. I even moved the gratings through their full range of motion and they were EXACTLY repeatable! That was nice. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: J.Dembicky Seeing grew worse as the wind direction changed to an E wind at around 23:00. We checked focus for the 2nd half and the seeing was around 3.5 arc sec and variable. Sloan observers confirmed the poor seeing conditions as well. The 1st half observers finished a couple mins early so the 2nd half got a good start. Unfortunately the wind shut us down at 00:42 with gusts over 35MPH. Strong winds continued for the remainder of the night and the humidity rose to over 80% for much of it as well. With the cold temps (-7C) and high humidity and wind we had ice crystals forming out of the clear sky which pretty much killed any chance of opening. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG/INST FAILURE TIME S/E/G/D/O TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION -------------------------------------------------------------------- UC08/O T/S 17:47 17:55 DIS motors confused, restart ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM -------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:25 DIS Slit -150(204) 187 58 0.6/1.9 357 13 none 1.31" 18:31 NA2 Gdr -673(56325) 187 58 0.6/1.9 31 8 R 0.97" 00:05 DISslit -125(11) 26 56 -3.8/-3.3 71 24 none 3.48" 00:11 NA2gdr -257(56742) 25 57 -3.8/-3.4 61 21 R 2.43" --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 38 6 4 75 (ENE) 173 cirrus none 17:01 35 6 19 17 (NNE) 178 cirrus none 18:01 34 8 9 350 (N) 179 clear none 19:01 33 9 10 358 (N) 183 cirrus none 20:01 32 11 8 36 (NE) 203 clear none 21:01 30 12 9 2 (N) 199 cirrus none 22:01 29 12 12 31 (NNE) 186 cirrus none 23:01 28 11 16 63 (ENE) 148 clear none 00:01 25 6 21 66 (ENE) 140 clear none 01:01 21 10 23 76 (ENE) 207 clear none 02:01 20 13 33 59 (ENE) 142 clear ice 03:01 19 13 29 76 (ENE) 145 clear ice 04:01 19 14 22 77 (ENE) 183 clear ice 05:01 18 14 38 69 (ENE) 122 clear ice note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
