McMillan The telescope was opened for cooling before sunset under mostly clear skies. Humidity looked like a potential threat for a little while, but dropped nicely after twilight. We spent the first hour or so of the night making adjustments to the behavior of the altitude axis that we hope will improve pointing; another pointing model would be desirable now that these changes have been made. Once the altitude seemed stable, we progressed to a Fabry-Perot instrument block combined with observer training. This went well, and the seeing appeared quite good. Next we mounted SPIcam for more focus vs. temperature tests, to see how the telescope focus changes with the fans off (as in dust events). Jeff Morgan logged in at 23:00 to do a more complete set of guider focus vs. rotation tests, since last night's were hampered by poor weather and limited time. Second Half Observing Specialist: J. Barentine Jeff reported problems with the guider seemingly going out of focus all of a sudden and losing his guide stars. Russet determined this was the result of setting the interval between focus positions too high in gfocus; lowering the interval helped. Started a 12x7 pointing model around 02:30. The pointing model finished by 03:30 and I turned back to SPICam to obtain some science images after implementing the new pointing model. ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 19:47 GFP -275(809) 132 61 5.9/6.6 286 10 5000 0.73 19:57 NA2gdr 0(66100) 136 62 5.6/6.3 292 7 ND2 0.85 21:24 SPIcam -25(698) 187 68 5.8/6.0 273 1 R 0.71 21:30 NA2gdr 1307(62307) 189 68 6.2/5.9 267 5 R 0.81 21:52 SPIcam 0(723) 203 67 6.3/5.8 250 6 R 1.07 22:15 SPIcam 0(723) 216 64 6.3/6.0 231 3 R 1.10 22:36 SPIcam 25(760) 225 62 6.3/5.9 266 4 R 1.01 22:50 SPIcam 25(761) 231 59 6.1/5.9 275 6 R 0.79 22:55 NA2gdr 785(61785) 232 59 6.2/5.9 280 5 R 0.96 23:07 SPIcam 25(771) 236 57 6.3/5.9 290 7 R 0.84 02:07 NA2Gdr 25(767) -45 64 6.7/6.2 335 5 R 0.90 02:15 SPIcam -50(697) -46 63 6.6/6.3 340 7 R 0.79 03:57 SPIcam 0(816) 171 31 5.0/5.7 9 10 R 1.37 04:04 NA2gdr 4894(65894) 173 31 6.3/5.6 19 7 R 1.50 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 50 30 12 289 (WNW) 225 ptly cldy none 17:01 44 34 7 314 (NW) 306 mstly clr none 18:01 43 33 7 343 (NNW) 312 clear none 19:01 43 31 8 284 (WNW) 205 clear none 20:01 42 32 9 287 (WNW) 288 ptly cldy none 21:01 43 33 5 279 (W) 301 mstly clr none 22:01 43 31 4 250 (WSW) 373 clear none 23:01 43 31 5 275 (W) 342 clear none 00:01 44 29 4 274 (W) 307 clear none 01:01 44 26 8 307 (NW) 202 clear none 02:01 44 25 7 326 (NW) 188 clear none 03:01 43 25 8 352 (N) 215 clear none 04:01 44 27 8 358 (N) 199 clear none 05:01 43 25 9 12 (NNE) 165 ptly cldy none 06:01 44 26 7 82 (E) 160 ptly cldy none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
