The clouds soon cleared away, but humidity remained high for some hours. We opened for a couple of short intervals, but the telescope quickly became cooler than the air. The second time we opened, the enclosure failed to slew, but it was fine once the controller was reset; it was probably objecting to the extreme cold. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: Jack Dembicky We opened the enclosure again around 00:15 but soon afterwards we had problems with the tertiary tip-tilts not responding correctly which was indicated when I could not find any bright stars in the echelle guider. Calls were made to Russet and Craig to try and resolve the problem but it seemed to be more serious than something simple and would require Jon Davis intervention in the morning. Clouds rolled in around 3AM which would have closed us for the rest of the night anyhow. ------------- FAILURE LOG ------------- PROG/INST FAILURE MODE TIME S/E/G/D/O TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION -------------------------------------------------------------------- UW05/S T/H 22:35 22:40 Encl controller needed reset UC06/O T/H 00:00 03:00 Tert tilt failed on move to NA1 ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:45 SPIcam -250(-126) 208 54 -8.7/-8.1 3 1 r' 2.17 22:51 SPIcam 0(46) -79 66 -8.9/-9.2 86 5 r' 1.61 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 15 12 4 319 (NW) 884 cloudy lt snow 17:01 14 12 2 357 (N) 737 cloudy none 18:01 13 11 2 347 (NNW) 437 ptly cldy none 19:01 11 9 11 17 (NNE) 422 clear none 20:01 15 10 10 36 (NE) 339 clear none 21:01 15 10 11 31 (NNE) 381 clear none 22:01 16 10 4 15 (NNE) 566 clear none 23:01 15 10 8 10 (N) 303 clear none 00:01 16 10 12 14 (NNE) 262 clear none 01:01 16 10 11 354 (N) 373 clear none 02:01 16 9 8 343 (NNW) 250 ptly cldy none 03:01 16 9 11 356 (N) 287 mstly cldy none 04:01 19 6 12 332 (NNW) 466 cloudy none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
