Barentine Opened at about 19:15 under mostly cloudy skies that cleared somewhat as it got darker. Ran into a problem immediately taking sky flats for the UW people: the telescope was not tracking. None of the obs-specs were reachable for help correcting the problem. I eventually figured it out on my own after about 20 lost minutes of time. Also, the cloud camera kept stalling, although it wasn't a "stuck-in-the-north" stall. After reporting a "stalled" status, I would go out to physically check the camera and find it in the 'home' position. At times in this process the seeing appeared to ramp up to in the range of 3 arcseconds. The UW group 1st half volunteered part of their time to Lens observations given than an event may be in progress. I ran the short Lens program despite the seeing conditions and all the other little problems that kept popping up because of the importance of getting observations soon. The data were SCP'd to Princeton but I said I would hold off on archiving them locally because they may not turn out to be useful. The seeing began to improve somewhat after the UW group took over and continued to improve as the rest of the first half went on. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: N.C. Hastings Second half started with clouds moving in from the west. Had a small delay during instrument switch, but were focusing nearly on schedule before the clouds moved in. Seeing was very good by this time. Clouds moved in and out for the rest of second half, mostly high cirrus that were able to see through for the most part. The earlier problems in the night were resolved with regards to the telescope, the cloud camera issues will still need looking into though. ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 19:39 Spicam 40(859) 84 56 6.8/9.5 227 17 MSSSO R 1.79" 20:11 NA2Gdr 7035(61000) 127 48 6.8/8.4 259 15 R 1.36" 20:44 Spicam -100(654) 149 52 6.9/7.8 240 8 MSSSO R 1.30" 23:38 NA2Gdr -3000(58503) 122 38 6.1/6.5 273 13 R 0.79" 23:59 Spicam 0(743) 127 42 6.3/6.4 269 9 r' 1.20" 00:04 NA2Gdr 1200(58503) 129 43 6.2/6.3 268 10 R 0.76" 01:22 DIS Slit +25(660) 267 39 7.0/6.6 274 6 none 1.02" --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 52 33 16 266 (W) 264 MstCldy none 17:01 53 33 18 263 (W) 253 MstCldy none 18:01 50 34 14 267 (W) 264 MstCldy none 19:01 47 33 15 262 (W) 301 PtlyCldy none 20:01 44 32 13 202 (SSW) 332 PtlyCldy none 21:01 45 32 16 216 (SW) 291 Clear none 22:01 44 32 9 221 (SW) 293 Clear none 23:01 44 33 9 267 (W) 295 Clear none 00:01 43 32 8 267 (W) 213 ptly cldy none 01:01 45 33 8 269 (W) 256 ptly cldy none 02:01 45 34 7 294 (WNW) 285 ptly cldy none 03:01 44 34 11 327 (NNW) 250 mstly cldy none 04:01 43 35 7 290 (WNW) 241 ptly cldy none 05:01 43 35 8 5 (N) 256 ptly cldy none 06:01 43 34 10 8 (N) 237 ptly cldy none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
