Earlier in the afternoon I cleaned the DIS roller races thoroughly. * On our first slew of the night the azimuth axis ran away. I stopped the axis and all moves after that worked fine. Skies were clear and winds moderate upon opening. Observing Specialist, 2nd Shift: Russet McMillan Skies remained beautifully clear during second half. The seeing was somewhat variable, with at least an hour of 0.8" seeing, more time around 1.2", and some excursions to poor seeing values. We were generally getting better seeing than DIMM indicated. We had a few minor problems, most notably a * recurrence of the sticky shutter on the guider which makes it more imperative to find a guide star near the center of the field; and * a large image jump at one point when an autocollimation update was made, making it necessary to read out the instrument prematurely. Aside from these difficulties, the observing went quite smoothly for a challenging program of non-standard DIS observations. --------------- OBSERVER'S COMMENTS ---------------- R. Walterbos (NM06): It was a good night. The equipment all seems to function very well. --------------- INSTRUMENT FOCUS LOG ---------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El #Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:05 DIS Slit 050(1526) 220 45 18.4/20.8 158 16 none 1.20" 21:20 NA2 Gdr -1661(1329) 266 59 17.5/18.8 148 20 none 0.95" 00:30 DISslit 100(1322) 35 58 15.7/16.3 131 26 none 1.07 01:55 DISimage -50(1176) 79 51 15.8/15.8 143 24 6563 1.26 ------------- WEATHER CONDITIONS ------------ Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 70 35 7 58 (ENE) 641 photometric none 17:01 71 31 12 195 (SSW) 601 photometric none 18:01 69 31 15 143 (SE) 660 photometric none 19:01 66 31 15 174 (S) 882 photometric none 20:01 65 29 13 156 (SSE) 781 photometric none 21:01 64 30 15 155 (SSE) 912 photometric none 22:01 63 31 19 130 (SE) 879 photometric none 23:01 62 31 15 127 (SE) 1062 photometric none 00:01 61 31 24 125 (SE) 1092 photometric none 01:01 61 33 22 132 (SE) 1159 clear none 02:01 60 37 22 136 (SE) 1322 clear none 03:01 60 37 16 145 (SE) 1293 clear none 04:01 59 37 19 130 (SE) 1411 clear none 05:01 59 38 17 138 (SE) 1415 clear none 06:01 59 37 15 143 (SE) 1354 clear none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
