A front came through shortly before sunset, bringing a precipitous drop in temperature, strong east winds, and high humidity. Put together, these conditions produced seeing of 4 +/- 1 arcsec for the first few hours of the night, eventually settling down to about 3 arcsec. The rapidly changing temperatures also made the focus rather strange until the telescope came near equilibrium. Observing Specialist, 2nd shift: Noel Camron Hastings The second half started better than the first, with a sudden shift in wind direction we dropped into sub arcsecond seeing. Chris Stubbs worked closely with the new student trainees throughout the evening. We switched back to DIS to take some spectra of objects imaged with SPIcam. The clouds moved in for a bit then cleared to some extant, allowing us to continue until the dust level increased beyond limits. We closed at 04:50 MDT due to a combination of clouds and dust and did not re-open. --------------- OBSERVER COMMENTS ---------------- C.Stubbs (UW09): A large contingent of UW students arrived on site today for 3.5m training. I am very grateful to all the site staff for all their help in welcoming us! In particular, both Russett and Camron were both gracious and generous with helping teach our team about the 3.5m. We had good seeing, and took SPIcam and DIS data on a candidate SN. thanks! --------------- INSTRUMENT FOCUS LOG ---------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El #Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:10 DISslit -300(676) -28 58 7.3/10.6 73 23 -- 3.2 " 21:50 DISslit 0(864) -37 47 6.5/6.8 73 23 -- 3.1 " 01:47 SPIcam 100(954) 31 62 11.2/10.4 187 10 R 0.90" ------------- WEATHER CONDITIONS ------------ Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 17:01 66 40 0 244 (WSW) 1206 clear none 18:01 53 40 9 82 (E) 1242 clear none 19:01 48 39 22 75 (ENE) 1315 clear none 20:01 45 38 21 73 (ENE) 973 clear none 21:01 44 38 19 77 (ENE) 1372 clear none 22:01 44 38 17 73 (ENE) 1505 clear none 23:01 44 37 12 81 (E) 1434 clear none 00:01 48 37 4 114 (ESE) 1509 clear none 01:01 53 37 11 182 (S) 1758 clear none 02:01 53 38 10 177 (S) 2224 clear none 03:01 51 37 9 180 (S) 1993 cloudy none 04:01 52 37 6 184 (S) 2039 cloudy none 05:01 51 37 5 179 (S) 2446 ptly cldy none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
