We opened at 21:15 to partly cloudy skies. The clouds cleared off by midnight, and the remainder of the night was clear with moderate seeing, becoming bad seeing in the last hour before twilight. * There were a number of problems apparent during checkout. The outer canister of desiccant for the PMSS was still pink, as reported yesterday. I changed over to the inner canister and issued a problem report. The vacuum and pressure for the PMSS have also been gradually degrading over the past few weeks. While I was cleaning the azimuth drive, I bumped against the counterweight readout and caused it to show a wildly inaccurate number; this caused some difficulty during the instrument change later in the night. The instruments and telescope generally behaved well during observing. The only problems were a few software-related guiding failures and several lapses of communications to the DIS slitviewer when switching from full frames to subframes. Pointing was fairly good, although a drift of objects to the right on the slitviewer (telescope drift to the west) was apparent during several successive slews. After a pointing correction, the pointing was noticeably better. Tracking was excellent with the guider in use, and we had no problems with the guider shutter.
