DIS was out of whack, as usual, after two separate 'home' commands. Both red and blue gratings required zerostep changes. The changes were under 5 steps each. The observer used twilight for cals. We opened at 20:15 to allow for cooling before observing. When we started to find a focus start the telescope could not place it on the chip. Since the tertiary was sitting at NA2 when I came on this afternoon, and since it had been worked on today, I decided to re-move it to NA2 again. This fixed our pointing error, whatever it was. I assume a tilt was off or something. During the night at around 22:30 MDT the internet connection between APO and Princeton seemed to die. I could reach the Princeton websites without trouble and all other sites. The Princeton observer could reach all other sites but NO APO sites for about 15 minutes. Connection was suddenly restored at 22:45 MDT. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: Russet McMillan The sky remained clear into second half. Pointing with DIS was not very good; the guider offset was beginning to accumulate to a significant number, but I kept forgetting to zero it and see if the pointing improved. Pointing with GRIM (after I remembered to zero the guider offset) seemed all right, but we didn't slew much. * We had some problems with the guider during the DIS observing. On occasion, a small offset caused guiding to fail although it didn't take the guide star out of the field of view. The shutter was up to its old tricks of not opening fully, sometimes partially obscuring a guide star. There were also some unusual arc-shaped streaks on a few images, possibly from scattered light. ****** OBSERVER COMMENTS ****** --------------- INSTRUMENT FOCUS LOG ----------------- Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El #Temp Dir MPH filt FWHM" --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:50 DIS Slit +250(1283) 089 53 17.0/17.7 207 13 none 1.41" 21:03 NA2Gdr 1520(1273) 091 54 16.9/17.3 222 10 none 1.12" 02:30 GRIM(f/10) 120(1207) 134 21 15.7/15.7 223 15 H 1.4 03:50 GRIM(f/10) 150(1160) 141 32 15.9/15.5 217 16 H 0.93 #First temp is air, second temp is telescope structure. ------------- WEATHER CONDITIONS ------------ Wind Precip. or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions -------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:01 70 24 12 270 (W) 881 clear none 19:01 68 22 7 269 (W) 877 clear none 20:01 63 18 5 247 (WSW) 953 clear none 21:01 61 18 9 197 (SSW) 1041 clear none 22:01 62 21 13 206 (SSW) 1104 clear none 23:01 62 20 15 207 (SSW) 1042 clear none 00:01 61 19 15 214 (SW) 964 clear none 01:01 61 18 10 204 (SSW) 1468 clear none 02:01 61 17 9 191 (S) 985 clear none 03:01 60 17 11 209 (SSW) 969 clear none 04:01 61 17 16 213 (SSW) 798 clear none 05:01 60 16 10 222 (SW) 840 clear none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
