It appears that the encoders on the tert rotator may have gone south on us, or for some reason we cannot read them. We also consulted Dave Woods on this. We tried an 'XQ#HOME' command and it finished the move in a record 0.00 seconds. It read out many values except tertiary rotator positions, the equivalent of typing "XQ#LSTATUS" I believe. The encoder position readings are maxed out at 9999999999.9 which sounds like the voltages are out of whack. Rather than dig into this problem and waste observing time, I opted to allow the first program to run 'as is' and see how it went. It appears that the TCC gets error message when trying to deal with the tertiary. (Random errors I found listed below) The tip/tilts and rotator position appeared frozen in the correct NA2 position, so we were able to operate. Jon Davis will look into this Monday morning. A problem report has been submitted. We opened at 19:59 MDT under clear skies. All ran smoothly except as noted above. We switched to GRIM at 22:15 MDT with no ill effects. TCC Errors Usually Encountered Throughout Night: ----------------------------------------------- DeadProc="T_BRDTELPOS" TertCmdMount=NaN, NaN, NaN TertActMount=NaN, NaN, NaN Text="Cannot compute TertOrient; not all axes homed" Modu="mir_o_MoveOneGalil"; Text="Tert returned an error message" Received="?HMERR some axes to be moved hve not been homed 1, 1, 1, 0, 0" 2nd Half Observing Specialist: Russet McMillan Second half remained clear with good seeing. The telescope and the instrument behaved perfectly. The only problem was a possible sudden change in the GRIM focus at f/20; half an hour after we had focused and got a best value of -25, with no significant change in temperature or telescope position in between, the best focus changed to +50. However, the image quality was rather hard to judge in f/20 at high airmass, even with good seeing -- so it's possible there was a human error in there as well. ****** OBSERVER COMMENTS ****** --------------- INSTRUMENT FOCUS LOG ----------------- Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El #Temp Dir MPH filt FWHM" --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:33 SPIcam -150( 775) 233 46 15.8/16.7 273 05 R 0.88" 20:44 NA2Gdr -633( 726) 188 57 15.5/16.4 272 06 none 0.85" 22:15 GRIM(f/5) +075(1036) 147 52 14.8/14.6 181 06 H 1.13" 01:20 GRIM(f/20) -25( ) 122 32 12.2/11.9 160 18 J 0.77" 03:05 GRIM(f/10) 175( ) 140 26 12.8/12.5 180 15 H 0.76" 04:00 GRIM(f/10) 100(972) 153 32 12.2/12.3 197 15 H 0.85" #First temp is air, second temp is telescope structure. ------------- WEATHER CONDITIONS ------------ Wind Precip. or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions -------------------------------------------------------------------- 16:01 73 25 12 211 (SSW) 754 clear none 17:01 69 23 14 260 (W) 677 clear none 18:01 65 19 5 6 (N) 656 clear none 19:01 64 20 7 290 (WNW) 732 clear none 20:01 60 18 0 234 (SW) 893 clear none 21:01 60 17 5 267 (W) 841 clear none 22:01 58 17 4 192 (SSW) 823 clear none 23:01 59 18 6 193 (SSW) 925 clear none 00:01 53 34 6 119 (ESE) 1338 clear none 01:01 53 34 19 160 (SSE) 1343 clear none 02:01 55 32 12 167 (SSE) 1191 clear none 03:01 55 31 10 183 (S) 1220 clear none 04:01 54 33 13 209 (SSW) 1291 clear none 05:01 54 33 8 177 (S) 1393 clear none 06:01 52 34 8 168 (SSE) 1236 clear none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
