Echelle calibration spectra were taken. Of the DIS calibration spectra obtained, the PU02 observer pointed out that the high-resolution quartz flats were weak (only a few hundred counts above background).* The arc spectra were similarly weak. Tertiary was at the correct rotation, but the tip-tilt values were noticed as not being correct for the NA2 port, even after redoing "set inst=dis". This should not matter? The low-resolution calibration spectra did seem fine besides. Opened dome at 20:55. The 3.5m slewed from but then would not be offset from Remark.* Restarted TCC, MCNODE and Remark. Telescope worked fine then. Down from 21:10 to 21:30. Some standards were obtained with DIS. After the "object" was done with DIS, we rotated to the Echelle. The guide camera was inaccessible (requesting image).* Deslected and re-selected DIS, closed Remark and reopened, restarted computer (which was apparently dead), even repeated this process, still inaccesible. TCC also became inaccessible (no prompt) about that time. Restarted TCC, MCnode, echelle slit viewer, and Remark. Guide camera then worked fine. Down time 22:00 to 23:10. Now, nothing was found in field, rotated back to DIS, bull's eye (object on slit). Then went back to the Echelle and found nothing still. The echelle mirror was actually in the calibration position eventhough both local and remote Remarks said "source" (even after syncing).* Down time 23:10 to 23:20. The object was then found near slit. The remote observer had problems with the "shift + click" routine for centering object onto the slit.* It tended to eject the object from full(?) frames. Down time 23:20 to 23:30. Things went fairly smooth as far as getting photons down the slit for the remainder of the night. Finally, had a chance to run further remote start-up experiments with the DIMM. Left all software running the previous morning. Had merely stopped seeing measurments in DIMM software. Failed to start remotely after various seectrl CMD's and seestart were issued, Polaris was on the chip, but had to "press" seeing measurement in laptop software to get things running.* Later, was able to steal the echelle slit viewer (unintentionally) from the remote observer. They had an auto-exposure sequence running, then I did. Is Remark not suppose to return a "CAMERA BUSY" if already in use? This may be related to the earlier problems. Closed dome at 06:00. Echelle and DIS calibrations were done afterwards. OBSERVER COMMENTS Rita Kim (PU02) There was a lot of machine and software failure. It was a big loss for a target of opportunity observation that won't come again!
