Frank and I opened and cooled at 20:55. We started testing collimation, among other things, using the Shack-Hartmman and then proceeded to do pointing models. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: Frank Deglman The Shack-Hartmann's orientation on the TR1 port was determined by holding a piece of foam over a given part of the primary and noting where this corresponded to in an S-H frame. The device was then rotated CCW 45 degrees so as to have the front of the scope at bottom (and NA2 to the right). Next the tilt of the secondary was adjusted. The Shack-Hartmann data initially indicated that coma has been virtually eliminated (at 40-50 degrees elevation at least). Airflow testing seems to show that both the primary and the tertiary exhibit high-frequency oscillations. The IDL guider monitor had problems in that the DIMM laptop was set to the wrong time, roughly one half hour behind reality. The time axis on the DIMM plot was just over three hours fast. An initial pointing model of 32 points was attempted. Had problems with some of the stars were saturating with the red and the red+ND2 filters. Switched to red+ND3. This gave on the order of a few hundred to several thousand counts for peak values. Ran into pointing model problems with version 2.2.6. and so used 2.2.5. Next had problems with the NA2 rotator. It would quit at -270 when it should have gone to -360. This caused skipping a few points in the model until Craig fixed the problem. 27 points were gotten. Later, a more complete 100-point model was run without incident. Did an altitude sweep with the S-H device and steadily decreasing the elevation. Repeated two points near zenith with a reproducibility of within 5 arcseconds. As sky brightened, went to brighter stars with shorter exposure times. Had to quit because of morning twilight bringing the background up too high. Closed dome at 06:15.
