Subject: 3.5m Night Log 20000318 Date: Sun, 19 Mar 100 08:11:53 -0700 (MST) From: bergeron@apo.nmsu.edu (Eddie Bergeron) SATURDAY MARCH 18, 2000 APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY OBSERVING LOG ACTUAL ASTRONOMER OBSERVER(S) INSTRUMENT DATE START FINISH Case Monosmith,Casey InSb 3/18 19:25 05:45 Ninkov INST SCHEDULED WEATH EQUIP OBS DAY NOTUSED I/RS/DN START FINISH D B D B D B USE D B DD01/S 19:07 05:15 - 0.3 - 0.0 - 9.8 0.0 - 0.0 (note: times listed include instrument change time) ACTIVITY LOG The dome remained closed until 19:25 this evening due to high winds. We opened up and started off with an offset grid to make a new instrument block for the InSb. Unfortunately, the only place I could get a zero-rot-obj was pointing towards the north into the still gusty winds. The image was pushed all over the place, resulting in a rather warped grid. Towards the end of the night in calmer winds we repeated the grid sucessfully, and were able to do the rot grid as well just before dawn. The instrument block for the InSb ("eagal") has been updated, but not yet tested on the sky. The old block can be used with the inst "oldeagal" (or two versions back of i_na2_eagal.dat). We took data in orion in very poor seeing until the scope stopped tracking at 6 deg elevation, and then decided to switch to GRIM to complete a part of Ed Turner's program from last week. Grim went on at 23:20 and we switched back to the InSb at 03:10. The winds died down and the seeing improved towards dawn. At around 23:15 Robert L. found the temperature alarm in the computer room going off, with the temp at nearly 100 F. He called Mark K., who came in and solved the problem (related to the big power outage in NM and the power dip we had here this afternoon). Apparently the autodialer never called Mark's number. I'm not sure if he found the cause for that. Some tourists came by just as we were getting ready to open and asked if we could "look at the moon or somethin'" Observing Specialist: Bergeron OBSERVER COMMENTS FOCUS LOG MARCH 18 2000 Wind Time Inst Focus Az El #Temp Dir MPH filt FWHM " 19:40 InSb -100( ) 2 39 -1.9/-1.1 35 22 K 2.6 23:55 GRIM -20(81) 168 50 -3.6/-4.4 46 4 K-short 1.1 03:35 InSb -115( ) 107 43 -5.3/-5.6 324 12 K 0.8 #First temp is air, second temp is telescope.
