Had to home the tertiary mirror from the control room with the assistance of Jon Davis.* The Dome Mac was radically altered so as not to be usable for talking to the tertiary during this process.* The Fabry-Perot people were running tests on their visiting instrument. Opened enclosure at 17:25. Flat fields for UW07 were taken. The dome incandescent lights "somehow" came back on, went unnoticed for a while and thus ruined most of the UW07 flats. The NA2 guider failed twice at at approximately 19:00.* This made most of UW07's SPIcam images of quite bad quality. The guider images were overwritten after changing to DIS, so we were unable to confirm shutter problems. Had trouble mounting DIS. The "beast" hung up on left metal boss. Stomping was quite effective in getting it seated properly. Kept losing UC10 in Remark. Network problems. Second-Half Observing Specialist: McMillan Tonight went far more smoothly than last night. The weather was mostly clear, with occasional light cirrus and moderate seeing. Pointing with DIS was just fine despite the axis-remapping and hard stops. The guider was having its usual shutter problems, with only about 1/3 of the area of the chip generally usable, but with some effort we were able to acquire a star in this usable region for about half the fields observed. When we did have a viable guide star, the seeing on DIMM agreed fairly well with that on the guider. There were some communications problems around midnight, both between APO and UC/JHU and also locally between Remark and the TCC. Restarting the Hub appeared to clear up the local problems; a few network problems persisted between APO and JHU until 02:00, but those problems were reflected in connections between other machines as well, and were probably not locally caused. We had some difficulty in offsetting stars horizontally along the (1.5 arcsecond) slit -- although the stars remained invisible on the slit viewer, the light was not getting to the spectrographs. This brings up once again the need for more cleanly-cut slits for DIS, so that we can see escaping stars before they get a whole arcsecond from the slit.
