I had some problems with the slitviewer on the first star (I did an offset, which I think it moved correctly to, then made a small adjustment in the Y axis and it slewed the image several arc secs and didn't seem to want to move back). The second star worked perfect though. Camron later told me not to adjust the instrument less than 0.3 arc sec or it will mess up and slew several (at least that is what we think may have happened in the first stars case.). Rusett explained later the error of my ways, I was thinking Rel and using Abs to do the offset. Other than that things ran pretty smooth. Observing Specialist, 2nd Shift: Noel Camron Hastings Actually, I have found that offsets of less than 0.2 arcsecs tend to be in the motor noise and are not often accurate. I have seen moves of 0.1 arcsecs in the offset control cause weird jumps of 0.4 arcsecs or more at times. Second half ran smoothly. The program that was running was looking at stars with high proper motions so we spent a bit of time looking around the sky for things. Images tended to be round tonight with mediocre seeing, so last night's image elongation seemed to be a transient phenomenon. Clouds threatened for a short time then cleared for the rest of the night. --------------- INSTRUMENT FOCUS LOG ---------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El #Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM" --------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:05 DIS Slit -75(457) 258 76 -0.1/1.0 346 11 none 1.08" 18:10 NA2 Gdr -324(???) 258 76 -0.1/1.0 346 11 none ?.??" 20:05 DIS Slit 0(514) 177 72 0.9/0.6 4 9 none 1.83" 20:15 NA2 Gdr -811(???) 177 72 0.9/0.6 4 9 none 1.72" ------------- WEATHER CONDITIONS ------------ Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 37 24 14 299 (WNW) 916 Clear none 17:01 33 22 11 301 (WNW) 1229 Clear none 18:01 32 23 10 358 (N) 1205 Clear none 19:01 35 16 17 321 (NW) 614 Clear none 20:01 34 18 11 331 (NNW) 797 Clear none 21:01 35 18 7 348 (NNW) 791 Clear none 22:01 34 20 15 336 (NNW) 1029 Ptly Cldy none 23:01 34 17 10 8 (N) 594 Ptly Cldy none 00:01 34 16 11 1 (N) 546 Clear none 01:01 34 14 20 14 (NNE) 392 Clear none 02:01 32 17 20 12 (NNE) 582 Clear none 03:01 33 14 9 13 (NNE) 381 Clear none 04:01 31 16 6 32 (NNE) 518 Clear none 05:01 31 15 9 329 (NNW) 460 Clear none 06:01 30 16 10 337 (NNW) 560 Clear none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
