I switched the DIS gratings from L - H tonight and did the calibrations. The red seemed to go with no problem but the blue test spectra I had a little problem making IRAF display the spectra (lots of noise when taken with AR lamp, I increased the exposure to 50sec to try for a better S/N, but that didn't help much). The lines were dim on the spectra (but easily visible to the eye) so I just used my own judgment to determine the correct line position/wavelength. I'll have Camron double check the blue just in case I messed it up since this is my first solo grating change (2nd half will be using them at 00:10). Russet mentioned I may have a problem with blue high. Some thin cirrus from 19:00 - 22:00 but nothing to stop observing for. Paula checked them before she started observing tonight to make sure they were correct. Observing Specialist, 2nd Shift: Noel Camron Hastings I showed up late due to one of my EMT class final exams. Got here in time to focus DIS for UW program. Everything was working smoothly and no problem encountered. Paula felt that the DIS gratings were accurate required no further adjustment. I did notice that most of our slit images throughout the night did not show round images, but images with a slight 'L' shape. I checked the load sensors on the PMSS and all axis info, but could not find an obvious culprit. It did not seriously affect our spectroscopy and we still obtained sub-arcsecond images throughout much of the night. There was very light, wispy cirrus through much of the night that barely shows up on the IRSC. --------------- INSTRUMENT FOCUS LOG ---------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El #Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM" --------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:20 Echelle -42(-247) 016 66 2.4/5.0 88 11 nd2 1.00" 20:33 Echelle -55(-333) -064? 41 -0.4/0.6 86 12 nd2 2.38" 22:10 Echelle 124(-206) 111 71 2.5/1.8 162 15 nd1 1.61" 00:15 DIS Slit +050(+644) -009 70 2.5/2.3 196 13 none 0.90" 02:05 DIS Slit +010(+639) +136 49 1.0/1.6 192 13 none 0.99" 02:10 NA2 Gdr +487(+639) +133 48 1.0/1.4 187 13 none 1.09" ------------- WEATHER CONDITIONS ------------ Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 44 15 8 217 (SW) 327 clear none 17:01 41 14 0 155 (SSE) 301 clear none 18:01 37 18 8 87 (E) 271 clear none 19:01 35 16 15 81 (E) 292 lt. cirrus none 20:01 32 20 18 77 (ENE) 390 cirrus none 21:01 31 12 12 109 (ESE) 243 cirrus none 22:01 37 4 14 161 (SSE) 159 clear none 23:01 37 5 17 162 (SSE) 164 clear none 00:01 39 4 18 181 (S) 149 mstly clr none 01:01 37 3 13 185 (S) 128 mstly clr none 02:01 35 10 8 180 (S) 281 mstly clr none 03:01 32 11 6 183 (S) 309 mstly clr none 04:01 32 3 15 200 (SSW) 270 clear none 05:01 32 7 13 216 (SW) 274 clear none 06:01 33 7 13 241 (WSW) 307 clear none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
