Dembicky Opened enclosure at 18:00. Setup took a bit longer than usual for some reason (SPIcam filter wheel change and DIS grating change and my not having a lot of experience at doing both slowed things down a bit) and I was not able to get much data (other than focus) for the first program before it was too late. The 2nd observer of the night started on time to variable seeing conditions. Things went smoothly with the telescope otherwise. Dust really jumped at around 10:00 and forced a closure at 10:06. We re-opened at 10:50 once the dust levels dropped. Observing Specialist, 2nd Shift: Noel Camron Hastings Second half started smoothly. The telescope was refocused and the seeing seemed to improve. Temperature fluctuated a bit, but all in all the conditions were very good. The second half observer ran the new slit imager remotely. I feel that very soon we will release operation permanently. Before this we will send out another email to the 3.5m general list reminding DIS users to read the manual and play with it. It is very simple and seems to speed things up quite a bit when the observer runs the slit imager rather than us. Less transferring via FTP and talking about object identification. The winds shifted and seeing was very bad after 03:00. The focus was bouncing all over the place and the pointing was not very good. It was one of the coldest nights I have seen so far this year, so perhaps that was the trouble. --------------- INSTRUMENT FOCUS LOG ---------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM" --------------------------------------------------------------------- 17:15 DIS Slit -010(659) 186 58 2.6/ 3.3 181 6 - 1.40" 17:30 NA2 Gdr 1025(???) 193 57 2.0/ 3.1 160 7 - 1.20" 21:20 DIS Slit -100(489) 225 48 -3.0/ 0.3 89 9 - 2.42" 21:25 NA2 Gdr 1468(???) 226 48 -2.6/ 0.2 86 9 - 2.30" 00:14 DIS Slit +050(468) 217 70 -1.2/-1.7 171 2 none 1.39" 00:17 NA2 Gdr -3911(469) 222 69 -1.7/-1.3 170 4 none 1.39" 01:50 DIS Slit -150(168) 007 67 -4.3/-6.5 080 14 none 4.34" 01:53 NA2 Gdr 4533(168) 006 67 -4.4/-6.6 083 13 none 2.65" 05:20 DIS Slit +050(283) 189 57 -7.1/-7.1 067 2 none 1.27" ------------- WEATHER CONDITIONS ------------ Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 41 14 0 280 (W) 307 clear none 17:01 40 15 1 221 (SW) 329 clear none 18:01 37 14 1 259 (W) 220 clear none 19:01 37 10 6 187 (S) 201 clear none 20:01 34 14 10 124 (SE) 221 clear none 21:01 29 16 8 87 (E) 270 clear none 22:01 25 18 10 75 (ENE) 3284 clear none 23:01 27 14 6 91 (E) 942 clear none 00:01 34 7 3 170 (S) 181 clear none 01:01 25 12 10 79 (ENE) 347 clear none 02:01 20 15 12 76 (ENE) 339 clear none 03:01 21 12 10 62 (ENE) 308 clear none 04:01 19 12 8 86 (E) 410 clear none 05:01 20 12 1 119 (ESE) 489 clear none 06:01 26 13 1 242 (WSW) 411 clear none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
