This process appeared to go well. Focus tests at the beginning of the night showed that the discrepancy between the instrument focus and the slitviewer focus was reduced but not completely gone. Some more work will still be needed there. Despite widespread cirrus, we were able to acquire and take spectra of several faint targets during first half, thanks to the improved sensitivity of the new slitviewer. We acquired several 20th magnitude targets in two-minute exposures without any need to take darks, even with the variable cloud cover and imperfect slitviewer focus. In good weather, once the focus difficulties are fixed, the increased sensitivity should be very obvious. The clouds cleared off for a good portion of second half, but the seeing became somewhat unstable at the same time. The echelle observations went very smoothly. --------------- INSTRUMENT FOCUS LOG ---------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El #Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM" --------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:14 DIS(blue) -150(637) 106 55 2.4/4.4 213 1 - 1.34 18:15 DIS(red) -150(637) 106 56 2.4/4.4 213 1 - 1.29 18:22 DISslit -300(480) 107 57 2.2/4.2 168 1 - 1.05 18:31 DIS(blue) -150(621) 109 59 2.6/4.1 206 1 - 1.26 18:31 DIS(red) -200(571) 110 59 2.6/4.1 206 1 - 1.12 18:39 gdr -200(534) 203 74 2.7/3.9 238 1 none 1.05 00:25 Echelle 35(-305) 293 67 -0.6/-0.3 175 13 ND1 1.20 ------------- WEATHER CONDITIONS ------------ Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 37 17 0 161 (SSE) 434 cirrus none 17:01 36 17 9 81 (E) 329 cirrus none 18:01 37 13 2 183 (S) 458 cirrus none 19:01 35 16 0 197 (SSW) 437 cirrus none 20:01 34 14 4 181 (S) 329 cirrus none 21:01 33 11 12 133 (SE) 303 cirrus none 22:01 33 2 13 132 (SE) 231 cirrus none 23:01 33 -2 17 144 (SE) 224 cirrus none 00:01 32 -1 10 172 (S) 220 mstly clr none 01:01 33 -3 6 186 (S) 216 mstly clr none 02:01 33 -1 12 180 (S) 225 cirrus none 03:01 32 2 14 163 (SSE) 240 mstly clr none 04:01 33 0 12 178 (S) 196 mstly clr none 05:01 34 1 13 181 (S) 222 cirrus none 06:01 33 2 14 178 (S) 222 cirrus none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
