All snow clear of roof. Turned the first program over to UW due to the SPIcam failure and the lack of alternative program. After UW was finished with cals I opened the shutter at 17:55 MST. The first slews I have made with the new rotator repair work show it to be behaving well, on time in both directions, no overshoots. First night tests with the new Apogee slit camera for DIS worked well despite focus problems. New comments sent to Jon Holtzman, but all in all it is faster, more sensitive and functional. (Exposure time of 10 secs gave 500 counts on an approx 16.3 mag object without darks) An exposure of 30 secs without dark was good for identifying an r=17.9 object. I saw no real advantage to taking darks up to 60 sec exposure times. The slit camera is not in focus and I tried tonight to remedy, but was unsuccessful. We need about 1 hour on sky to properly fix it, and first the DIS collimators need to be checked and focused. Observing Specialist, 2nd Shift: Russet McMillan The echelle observing was very smooth and trouble-free. The telescope appeared to be pointing well (though some of the coordinates were not very accurate), and the seeing was sub-arcsecond whenever we measured it. We saw some image elongation that was probably caused by windshake, but it produced no significant difficulties. --------------- INSTRUMENT FOCUS LOG ---------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El #Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM" --------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:33 DIS Slit 100(0745) 163 51 0.1/2.6 354 9 none 1.45" 18:40 NA2 Gdr 1500(0745) 191 56 0.7/2.5 001 10 none 1.23" 00:18 Echelle 63(-239) 287 71 1.6/0.7 21 22 ND1 0.74 ------------- WEATHER CONDITIONS ------------ Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 36 8 0 320 (NW) 286 Clear None 17:01 35 10 5 7 (N) 304 Clear None 18:01 35 1 14 330 (NNW) 317 Clear None 19:01 34 -7 7 5 (N) 222 Clear None 20:01 36 -9 16 21 (NNE) 244 Clear None 21:01 36 -10 11 16 (NNE) 152 Clear None 22:01 36 -10 16 6 (N) 431 Clear None 23:01 34 -10 8 9 (N) 390 Clear None 00:01 35 -4 21 17 (NNE) 294 Clear None 01:01 37 -7 11 4 (N) 219 Clear None 02:01 37 -7 18 27 (NNE) 350 Clear None 03:01 36 -8 8 33 (NNE) 228 Clear None 04:01 36 -7 16 14 (NNE) 233 Clear None 05:01 36 -7 18 12 (NNE) 213 Clear None note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
