But I was here for the dedication anyway, and the weather looked too good to waste. There was the concern about the recent changes in collimation, which can't be adjusted without a pointing model, and in addition there was a tempting TOO if the seeing happened to be good. So I thought I would do just a few hours to see if I could get anything useful. I started out by checking the collimation with SPIcam -- and it looked fine. Although some astigmatism was apparent in the focus frames, there was no sign of the asymmetrical donuts we were seeing as recently as Monday. That meant no need to update the collimation, and no need for a pointing model. It still doesn't tell us anything about what causes the changes in secondary tilt that we've been seeing, but it seems in this case the change was in our favor. So I looked at the possibility of getting the GRB Jon Holtzman was interested in. The seeing wasn't very good when I focused (around 1.3"), but I tried two shots of the field anyway. Seeing on the guider was over 2 arcsecs at times, and the delivered seeing on the images was 1.7, so I gave up and went home. Observing Specialist, 2nd shift: Noel Camron Hastings I came in around 23:30 to clear skies. I opened the dome and allowed the second half observer to start cals and setup early. All systems ran well throughout the remainder of the night. --------------- INSTRUMENT FOCUS LOG ---------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El #Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 19:48 SPIcam -250(0791) 92 65 12.8/14.6 15 09 R 1.20 00:51 DIS Slit +070(1134) 216 46 11.3/11.4 148 13 - 1.41 00:58 NA2 Gdr -0523(1134) 216 45 11.3/11.4 118 07 - 1.21 ------------- WEATHER CONDITIONS ------------ Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 60 27 7 346 (NNW) 309 clear none 17:01 62 25 14 303 (WNW) 283 clear none 18:01 58 25 12 318 (NW) 293 clear none 19:01 55 24 1 357 (N) 295 clear none 20:01 56 25 10 16 (NNE) 279 clear none 21:01 54 28 16 81 (E) 334 clear none 22:01 52 30 19 73 (ENE) 470 clear none 23:01 51 30 9 100 (E) 642 clear none 00:01 48 33 10 106 (ESE) 1502 clear none 01:01 53 28 14 142 (SE) 756 clear none 02:01 52 27 2 139 (SE) 541 clear none 03:01 53 28 4 113 (ESE) 582 clear none 04:01 53 28 0 150 (SSE) 614 clear none 05:01 53 28 0 141 (SE) 507 ptly cldy none 06:01 52 31 9 113 (ESE) 1001 ptly cldy none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
