Service observing was performed for PU05. The NA2 guider failed to cool properly due to a broken wire in the rotator. It's use was discontinued. Gordon Richards performed UC07 with DIS. The guiding was done manually using the DIS slitviewer to provide offset information. 2nd half observing specialist: McMillan Second half started out clear, with moderate winds and good seeing. Clouds started moving in around 2:15, and the telescope was closed from 2:45 to 4:15 because of clouds, but all other weather parameters remained fairly constant. Guiding by hand was fairly work-intensive, especially since we went down to 4 airmasses in the SW facing near a 20 mph wind. Some image jumps were seen, but not as bad as what was reported with the echelle a few nights ago. When we returned to lower airmasses, the tracking improved. OBSERVER COMMENTS Gordon Richards (UC07): Things were reasonably productive given that I have not observed in months. We got a number of spectra. However, as a public service, I'd like to encourage those of you who (like me) have been putting off the IRAF upgrade, to do it now. IRAF has serious y2k problems -- you will need to upgrade to v2.11.3 I had considerable trouble trying to run v2.11.1. (Though I haven't gotten v2.11.3 to work yet either!)
