The telescope was opened at 16:55 under clear skies. Jill Knapp observed for PU06 with DIS, with help from Fan and Strauss. The DIMM was rendered inoperative by the computer failing to start up. Seeing on focus images was good, and the guider occasionally got subarcsecond measurements. Both the DIS slitviewer and the guider showed occasional small image jumps that might be mirror-related. The Cloud Camera crashed about 22:00. It was merely restarted and is apparently fine. 2nd half observing specialist: McMillan A productive and uneventful night, with no significant problems to report. The weather was cool and stable, with clear skies and steady winds. We have few quantitative seeing estimates because the temperature was so stable that we only focused twice, and the first focus star was saturated. However, seeing appeared quite good to the eye. * The telescope showed *good* tracking and pointing low in the WSW, in contrast to behavior a few nights ago. Tonight the wind was from the same direction, but at less than 15 mph. The stiff winds on nights when trouble was seen appear definitely implicated. The guiding was a little temperamental on some exposures when the telescope was not in the wind at all, but no egregious excursions occurred. * Two echelle observers have recently had trouble moving filters for the slitviewer shortly after the observing specialist had been adjusting the filters for purposes of focus or pointing corrections. Echelle users are reminded to sync both before and after any move, especially if they know someone else has been commanding the instrument. Syncing the echelle is quick and painless and avoids many potential problems.
