The observers were Bernadette Rodgers for UW03 and Jeff Brown for WS02. Jeff had to deal with a very slow network connection from WSU. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: N.C.Hastings I opened up at 23:50 as the clouds thinned a bit. Since GRIM was on we tried and succeeded in shooting through the clouds. There were no problems to report. -------- Observer Comments -------- WS02 (Brown): Bad weather was almost fortunate tonight, because terrible network problems between APO and WSU made it impossible to transfer images between the two places so we could examine the data we got. We are examining ways of getting science done for the rest of the run (4 of the next 5 first-halves) by getting finder charts, etc., to Karen in the event that net problems prevent transfer of images tomorrow night as they did tonight. Lamp tests indicate that for this DIS configuration (high resolution, central wavelength for the blue side of 4340, 1.5 second slit) the Ar lamp only gets about 4000 counts over bias in 10 minutes of exposure, which is prohibitively slow for the program. By contrast, the red side at central wavelength 6400 gets saturated with the Ne lamp in 60 sec. For the science we are trying to do, we will simply write off the blue side for now. A brighter blue-wavelength arc lamp would be a big help, perhaps; with our red program objects there may be approximately zero blue-side counts anyway. UC05 (Holden): Everything went quite well tonight. We had no problems with the instrument and only 1 glitch with the network connection. All in all, a very productive run.
