Ran into the scattered light problem with SPIcam same as last night. I have come to a conclusion with respect to evening flats. I band shows the scattered light the worst, and the light it is getting is coming from the sunset, off the inside of the tertiary from the inside of the dome, not through the rotator. Jon Brinkman also believed this to be the case last night. If you point 30 degrees of the horizon, directly into the sunset, or directly away from it you get very little structure, but still noticeable gradient along one side of the chip. Pointing the telescope due east, and at zenith is the only place to avoid the scattered light. While we were seeing scattered light in the I band images there was no evidence in either B, g' or V at any pointing this evening. Upon finishing flats and beginning the focusing for the evening I had everything commence dying. First, I was focusing the guider when I noticed that the gfocus script was going nowhere. I checked the TCC window and saw no activity. I tried a 'gcam doread' command and this proceeded to lock the TCC. At least I could not get a reply from anything I would try to type in. Time was fleeting, so instead of rooting out what could be wrong I restarted the TCC, then restarted the MC, and then restarted the guider. After all this I still received no reply from the guider. I noticed that the GCAMUSER process was not running for some reason. This was quite odd, since I had just restarted everything. I restarted the GCAMUSER process, tried a 'gcam doread' and all worked fine from then on out. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: Russet McMillan Second half was clear and uneventful. OBSERVER COMMENTS G.Richards (UC01): Quite productive. No problems to speak of.
