The enclosure was opened at 19:20 to dry, clear skies. I took some evening flats in both red and blue for the lens program later in the night. Xiaohui agreed to clump his time into the beginning of the night so that we did not need to split up his run for the lens program which would have meant meddling with the DIS setup he had dialed in. DIS LN2 dewer repairs were made today resulting in a 90% fix, though a small leak still is evident, it is again operational. At 20:40, the slit camera crashed, rebooting fixed it, though we lost some time. I should mention that it only works well at 38.4k, in case this happens to anyone else. Faster transfer speeds choke it. The air was EXTREMELY turbulent. Seeing varied between 2.2"-5" at times, rendering the guider useless. This caused problems for the dim objects Xiaohui was working on because we could not make corrections manually often enough off the long slit images. - Camron Hastings Xiaohui asked if we could do the PU01 observations at the end of the night and we agreed that would be OK. This way the DIS configuration could stay in spectral mode, saving Xiaohui from having to take a new set of calibration images. Seeing gradually improved over the second half of the night. Xiaohui obtained good spectra for several of his faint objects and I got some good images of gravitational lens 0142. - Karen OBSERVER COMMENTS PU02 (Fan): "It's a very successful night. Although we had some horrible seeing for the first half, with the help from Cameron and Karen, the observation went quite smoothly. We discovered at least five new quasars, 4 of them from the June SDSS data. No instrument problem to report."
