The dewpoint depression was slightly below the limit for opening, but careful monitoring of conditions allowed me to stay open for the following tasks. When opening the enclosure it was found that the louvers and the pressurization fan did not run, and could not be operated. Other fans and commands worked fine. The night started by getting sky flats for the guider to test the new NA2 louver system. It looks pretty good, and we are not suffering from any noticeable obstruction. First, I took some SPIcam sky flats in V, they looked quite nice. After twilight I began on the new SPIcam instrument block. Telescope and instrument performed fine. The new block was not significantly different from the previous, telling me that the minor amount of disassembly that took place during the shutdown did not affect the chassis much. Pointing after the block showed it to be correct. Second, I tried to get guider block data. Guider focused fine and the block went fine. Again, no major deviations from the original block data, and a pointing afterwards confirmed the correct information. During all this block data, and various slewing around the sky, I came to the decision to put the pointing model at the bottom of the list. The telescope placed the intended object in the dead center every time, with both the guider as instrument, and SPIcam. I don't feel that there is any major need to redo the block right away. After the instrument blocks were complete, I simply tried to image with SPIcam. I chose the lens object 2237 from PU01 for these tests so that we could at least get some science value out of it. The seeing was very poor for this object, and though SPIcam and the guider performed fine, I gave up after 3 images as they were mush. I mounted DIS for the second half of the night to take some spectra, but found the dew point depression getting too low. I closed at 01:28. After closing, I tried to start doing lamp cals with DIS, but found that the Obs Mac had to be restarted because the mouse unplugged. Nice feature, unplug the mouse, reboot the computer. Anyway, after restarting, I could not get REMARK to log into the MC. It kept saying that the command 'timed out'. After about 30 minutes of this, I tried to test the slit camera on DIS, and found that it did not work. The 'CCDOPS' program simply says that "No camera could be found. Please make sure it is connected to the correct port." I tried to check the cabling on the PC and on DIS, but found no broken connections. I also cycled all the calibration lamps on and off to make sure they worked, all OK. No further instrument engineering took place tonight, but if the slit camera can be fixed quickly, and the calibrations of the DIS gratings go without a hitch, I believe that we could return to science observing, and work out any small bugs as they arrive. Perhaps another 1/2 night is necessary for DIS testing and GRIM images.
