The clouds were present, but not threatening. The altitude encoder was replaced today, after last night's problems, and the guider was remapped resulting in proper operation now. We focused DIS, started the guider, then the clouds moved in....then moved out. We had a pretty good run, a few focus oscillations from +25 to -50, and the slit mask wheel seemed to miss the detent twice, requiring me to go upstairs and jiggle it. This caused a minimum loss in observing time. Lens monitoring went well, and 10 images of 2237 were obtained. No problems encountered. Dan Zucker brought up the rear of the night. After an odd mixup as to which gratings were installed (DIS showed that the high were installed, but medium have been in for the whole month!) we were back on the sky. The telescope seemed to have a small problem with accurate rotations, and positioning that cost us quite a bit of time. I don't know why, the pointing was excellent all night, just when Dan starts we have probs! We eventually found the correct field after another local pointing correction. It seems that the first pointing correction introduced a 60" error. We acquired data for the rest of the night. Dan did notice that the last frame of the night was supposed to be rotated by 90 degrees, but according to his judgment it was only rotated by 60 degrees. In addition, the cloud scanner died around 02:00, and I could not revive it. I tried to reset it, cycle power, scanstop, scanreset, nothing worked. -Camron Hastings FOCUS LOG August 24th 1998 Best Telescope Temp Wind Seeing Time Instrmt Focus Az El Air/Truss Dir MPH filter FWHM" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 21:30 DIS +025/6966 115 42 17.4/18.9 182 3.9 657-8nm 1.09" 01:15 DIS +025/6794 157 70 16.8/16.3 250 4.8 - 1.10" WEATHER LOG August 24th 1998 Wind Time Temp-F Dewp-F MPH Direction Dust Sky Precip ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 66 51 4 271 (W) 540 Cloudy None 17:01 71 52 8 254 (WSW) 465 Cloudy None 18:01 63 50 5 86 (E) 636 Cloudy None 19:01 64 49 1 89 (E) 855 Ptly Cldy None 20:01 62 48 3 248 (WSW) 489 Ptly Cldy None 21:01 63 46 4 194 (SSW) 488 Ptly Cldy None 22:01 63 46 6 184 (S) 538 Ptly Cldy None 23:01 61 48 9 162 (SSE) 627 Clear None 00:01 61 47 7 178 (S) 633 Clear None 01:01 61 46 10 183 (S) 795 Clear None 02:01 63 44 4 247 (WSW) 837 Clear None 03:01 63 44 5 269 (W) 763 Clear None 04:01 62 44 8 324 (NW) 852 Clear None 05:01 63 44 10 302 (WNW) 846 Clear None note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
