The thick clouds eventually dissipated, though high cirrus kept moving in and out, thus ruining NM05's ability, as they needed photometric conditions. Dan Zucker came on at 01:25. The guider issue from last night has been resolved, mostly. Tonight when running tests on it, I noticed that the piston focus values are way out of whack. Normally they run from anywhere between 49000 and 56000, but tonight they are at 25000, very low. Also, about 1/3 of the field is obscured. This obscuration cuts across the upper area of the frame, and in a straight line, so I do not think that it is due to the baffling, as they are circular. There is an image in /export/images named guide0823.01.fits, if anyone is interested in seeing it. My guess is that when some work on the rotator was done last week the mirror assembly was impacted somehow. This would also explain the fact that the gmech power was switched off, and the switch is kinda hard to accidentally hit, but that is all I can think of. Around 02:30 we seemed to have lost the altitude drive. I shut the motors on and off, re-inited them, and we regained it, but we were plagued with weird little tracking problems most of the night, probably mostly due to this motor problem. Around 04:00 the altitude drive failed, and I could not get it back online. During these failures, I never received notice from REMARK or anything that things were malfunctioning. I went up to the enclosure and checked things out, manually drug the telescope down to horizon to make sure there were no moths or other obstructions, and after this I re-inited and we had altitude again. I am perplexed...all seems fine. Lost altitude later, could not regain it reliably. Also, when closing, I could not slew, I kept getting an error saying something like "mag sensor error too great to correct". What a night...Also, to end it, I could not issue any slew commands after 04:50. I tried a few things, but was always greeted with errors, so I tied it now where it was sitting, about 180 degrees out from normal position... -Camron Hastings FOCUS LOG August 23rd 1998 Best Telescope Temp Wind Seeing Time Instrmt Focus Az El Air/Truss Dir MPH filter FWHM" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 23:50 DIS +100/6787 166 60 14.6/13.6 356 8.1 - 1.81" WEATHER LOG August 23rd 1998 Wind Time Temp-F Dewp-F MPH Direction Dust Sky Precip ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 65 51 0 257 (WSW) 698 Clouds None 17:01 69 53 5 207 (SSW) 664 Clouds None 18:01 63 49 1 187 (S) 740 Clouds None 19:01 64 48 0 254 (WSW) 702 Ptly Cldy None 20:01 62 44 6 71 (ENE) 693 High Cirrus None 21:01 59 45 9 85 (E) 817 High Cirrus None 22:01 58 45 8 95 (E) 737 High Cirrus None 23:01 57 45 10 78 (ENE) 778 High Cirrus None 00:01 56 45 8 46 (NE) 836 High Cirrus None 01:01 57 45 4 346 (NNW) 1073 High Cirrus None 02:01 59 45 7 357 (N) 1001 High Cirrus None 03:01 58 45 6 314 (NW) 873 High Cirrus None 04:01 57 46 6 282 (WNW) 810 High Cirrus None 05:01 57 47 3 265 (W) 798 High Cirrus None note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
