Chris Stoughton was the observer for UC05. COMMENTS:Not much to report. We opened on time, and spent the half-night taking spectra. Weather was fine, focus was good, no hang-ups. It would be nice to have the cloud camera working.... but this evening we didn't need it. Thanks. ****I tried to keep the cloud camera operational, but I had to work with the slit viewer, and could not take time to keep filling it. Nichole King traded time with UW06 due to the SPICAM problem. I was in the process of switching to the high gratings, when I found the grating wheel would turn. Nichole wrote a trouble report: The problem is described as: With the installation of the high resolution grating, we were not able to move the gratings or mirrors. Tia attempted several times to cycle the instrument and then re-boot. At 3am Tia called John Brinkman, and soon after attempted to tape down a switch inside the instrument which decides whether or not the door is open. Cycling did not work again. At 3:50 am we switched to GRIM II, but found that it was not working either in successive images of a bright star (not seen). Cycling the instrument and re-booting did not help. At 4:15 am the APO MAC hung. Further attempts to take an image after the MAC came back up were not successful as only the first quadrant was present in the image. I tried cycling the power to DIS and reinitializing. I tried homing the instrument and moving the gratings in remark. It would not budge. We tried to use GRIM, and after seeing the same image four times, I decided to cycle the power. This seemed to make things worse. Altogether, it was a very dreadful night. Forecast:(4:30am) .TODAY...FAIR SKIES THIS MORNING BECOMING PARTLY CLOUDY BY MIDDAY WITH A SLIGHT CHANCE FOR AFTERNOON THUNDERSTORMS. .TONIGHT AND WEDNESDAY...PARTLY CLOUDY WITH SCATTERED EARLY NIGHTTIME AND AFTERNOON THUNDERSTORMS.
