The sky started cloudy early on, and we were delayed in starting the instrument block. Dan Long came down to help out, and was helpful in explaining a number of things regarding the telescope. Shooting through clouds, we were finally able to finish the instrument block and focus, so when the clouds cleared at 01:30, we were on the sky. The new spacer made for the GFP worked wonderfully, and placed the instrument far enough away that normal focus values were obtained. This allowed us to use the guider the last half of the evening, which worked as it should. There is some noise being picked up,possibly in the frayed wiring though, it is apparent on the images, and is varying in frequency. (Note: The replacement wiring has already been ordered) Last part of the evening was spent on the lens monitoring program. The switch to SPIcam went fine, though there was a strange focus problem with SPIcam it seemed. There were possible internal reflections that I had not noticed before, and the best focus I could obtain to get in focus was over 2". This was a big shift from GFP's 1". -Cam OBSERVER'S COMMENTS ------------------------------------------------------------------- Goddard FP APO 3.5m Date: June 3/4 1998 Weather: Cloudy until 1:30AM, clear the rest of the night. The new interface plate did allow confocality for the FP and the guider, which resulted in successful guiding while observing. We thank the Sunspot machinists for doing such a wonderful job on such short notice. Due to the new spacer, we repeated the instrument blocking procedure. We discovered that object offsets appear to be superior to instrument offsets for field rotations in order to find guide stars. Scattered moonlight was present in some of our images. We should investigate tube baffling to remedy this. ------------------------------------------------------------------- FOCUS LOG June 3rd, 1998 Best Telescope Temp Wind Seeing Time Instr Focus Az El Air/Truss Dir MPH filter FWHM" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 22:45 GFP -200/6569 130 47 16.6/15.0 243 21 9200 .98" 00:15 GFP 150/6466 163 58 13.5/14.7 243 20 9200 1.07" 03:55 Spicam -370/6135 117 40 8.8/10.7 235 17 g' 2.10" (Note: The focus values for the GFP changed so dramatically due to a change in the instrument block. Also, the FWHM for SPIcam is most likely due to a possible hardware or operator problem.)
