Povilas Palunas and Meena Sahu were on site with the GFP instrument. They had the first half of the evening. Comments:We were again troubled by pointing errors, as the offsets we used yesterday did not bring us back to the same place. The pointing was off by over 2arcmin. The sign of the x-offset mysteriously reversed moving the telescope in the opposite direction from yesterday adding to our troubles. We lost 30min. The night began with auspicious seeing, .6" in short .1 sec focus exposures. Our first science image yielded 1arcsec seeing. However, subsequent exposures degraded and we ended our evening with 2arcsec seeing. Povilas Palunas and Meena Sahu Dan Zucker was available for the second half of the evening. Comments:The weather was not cooperative tonight -- the sky was hazy and seeing was 3 arcseconds or worse for a good fraction of my run, although seeing eventually dropped to about 2 arcseconds. I had a couple of apparent rotator-trailed short images, including a focus frame. Again, Tia's reinitializing of the axes and pointing error corrections seemed to help. The guider worked wonderfully, even with the awful seeing at the beginning of my run, and the graph of guider offsets suggested that the guider was compensating well for the problem with the tracking rate.* (* means a trouble report has been issued or appended to) FOCUS LOG JUNE 28, 1998 Best Telescope Wind Seeing Time Inst Focus Az El Temp# Dir MPH filter FWHM " 21:10 GFP +130(6838) 251.5 77.5 22.7/24.62 177.5 12.1 7964 0.6 21:16 GUIDER 56263 256.1 75.4 22.8/24.45 178.8 11.8 empty 1.44 01:25 SPICAM -400(6492) 83.4 51.2 17.6/18.35 131.8 26.4 V 2.17 02:30 SPICAM -350(6420) 91.6 65.4 18.0/17.86 146.8 22.5 H alpha 1.45 # The first temp is air, the second is truss, both in degrees C.
