Xiaohui Fan and Michael Strauss were observing for the first half of the night. Comments:A beautiful half-night: great weather, and everything worked flawlessly. Many thanks to Tia for her usual efficient help. We should also mention the superb pointing: we were observing objects from the SDSS first-light data, and 3/5 of them fell completely within the 1.5" slit, while the other two were no more than 2" off. This is due both to the pointing of the telescope, and the superb astrometric solutions for these data! -Michael Dan Zucker was available for the second half of the evening. Comments:We had a productive night, although the initial promise of ~1 arcsec seeing degenerated to about 1.5 arcsec early on. Minor errors in the tracking rate manifested themselves as elongated stars in 5 min unguided exposures, and we lost about 35 min to a period of serious tracking errors (at first we thought the guider was just misbehaving). I hope the tracking gets better after the shutdown... When the tracking was not going crazy, the guider worked wonderfully, yielding images with nice round stars. The data transfer rate between APO and UW is painfully slow -- tonight each image took from 70 to 120 sec to ftp.
