Skies were clear, and remained so, and dust counts low, temperatures were cool. This was the first night of the visiting observer's Fabrey-Perot instrument, and after the creation of the instrument block, and verification of the axes, it was on the sky. Seeing was exceptionally good at .79"! Tonight was also the last night of training for myself, the new Obs Specialist. Karen Gloria is on vacation for 3 months, and Tia Hoyes and myself will be the primary night operators. All facility systems were in good working order with no failures this evening. The previous nights difficulties seem to have been cured with the maintenance performed by the day crew, thanks. We closed this morning at 05:30. NCH OBSERVER'S COMMENTS ------------------------------------------------------------------- Report on first night (June 2/3) of observing with Goddard Fabry-Perot at the 3.5m.. Weather: excellent. clear, 0.7" images with FP. Set-up: The FP focal plane is 2 1/16 inches behind the rotator mount, the while nominal telescope focus is approximately 8 inches (correct??) from the mount. As a result our focus was at an extreme value which did not enable us to use the auto guider. It took approximately one hour to determine the focus. The instrument blocking took approximately three hours (10-1). It took an additional hour to determine the conversion between x and y telescope offsets with North and South. We started science exposures at 2AM. Science: We observed on target from 2-5 but could not guide. Subsequent 15 minute exposures were offset by about 12 pixels (2") to the southeast due to a drift in the tracking; although no smearing was evident in most of the images. In order to solve the guider problem we need to construct a spacer that will place the instrument focal plane closer to the nominal focus of the telescope. We have in hand a spacer ring left over from the development of SPIcam and a plate with the FP bolt pattern as a start to constructing the spacer. ------------------------------------------------------------------- FOCUS LOG June 2nd, 1998 Best Telescope Temp Wind Seeing Time Instr Focus Az El Air/Truss Dir MPH filter FWHM" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 00:30 GFP -4920/1842 237 67 17.7/18.3 300 12.3 7964 .79" (Note: The focus value is not a mistake) WEATHER LOG June 2nd, 1998 Wind Time Temp-F Dewp-F MPH Direction Dust Sky Precip ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 75 19 8 296 (WNW) 227 Clear None 17:01 74 19 13 234 (SW) 345 Clear None 18:01 74 21 12 209 (SSW) 364 Clear None 19:01 74 21 5 223 (SW) 427 Clear None 20:01 68 22 11 260 (W) 633 Clear None 21:01 64 21 12 268 (W) 519 Clear None 22:01 64 22 13 271 (W) 427 Clear None 23:01 65 22 6 311 (NW) 744 Clear None 00:01 65 22 11 273 (W) 739 Clear None 01:01 63 22 9 305 (NW) 626 Clear None 02:01 63 22 7 319 (NW) 616 Clear None 03:01 63 22 12 342 (NNW) 626 Clear None 04:01 62 22 14 327 (NNW) 448 Clear None 05:01 60 24 11 321 (NW) 559 Clear None note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
