Dust counts were much lower than previous days, around 1000 in the enclosure. The haze was also less of an issue, though still present. All in all, a beautiful night, with everyone at APO up and active! ;) Last nights rotator problems were diagnosed and resolved by a hard working Engineering team. Replacement of the motor and work on the bearings was necessary, and John, Mark & Dave had it all together before twilight! All rotator functions are operable, even improved. Minor problems with the control room MAC crashing*. Did not cause any problems with the observing, luckily. Slowly, I am getting the hang of this. Everything except those wacky passwords! Also, work continues on the Observing Specialist's Manual, look for it in the stores by Christmas! Camron Hastings :] * Trouble report filed OBSERVER COMMENTS ------------------------------------------------------------------- (Comments for observer NM04 pulled from logs...) 23:54:30:mactcp_Cam:129:0:message How's everything going? 23:56:37:mactcp_charles:23:0:message very smoothly. Driftscanning is running perfectly. I'm trying the new slow scan option, and it seems to work. Focus seems to be holding, maybe its degraded by .1 or .2 pixels. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Instrument, telescope, support, and weather were all excellent. SPIcam bias level appears low, but Al Diercks warned us beforehand that there was a recent (and perhaps temporary) change here. Also as Diercks advised beforehand, new shutter opening time is not yet calibrated well, so not clear that exposure times in headers are correct; a possible caution here (but ask Al) is that exposure times should be kept at ~4sec or longer if possible, pending clarification of this (we collected a little relevant data, and Diercks et al hope to collect more).
