The observers were myself for PU01, and Brooke Skelton and Gene Magnier for UW04. UW04 swapped time with UC06 and UW04 who were originally scheduled for last night. They had some problems which are detailed in their comments. The seeing was very good at the beginning of the night but deteriorated. OBSERVER COMMENTS Gene Magnier (UW) - "It was a clear night with reasonably good data. We got a series of images of the microlens event in the south. We were also able to start the guider from the X-terminal windows, which is nice. We had some frustrating problems with the DIS remark interaction. The DIS configuration window has some problems with the spectral settings that make it annoying and frustrating to change the wavelengths and slits. The wavelength setting boxes don't allow you to type the entire number in. Instead you either have to use the mouse to toggle the number or you need to highlight and set each digit individually. Also, Remarks seems to get confused about the configuration and refuses to change the setting. This seems to happen when you define a setting, then select a new setting with the same mask, grating and filter, but different wavelength settings. In that case it will refuse to change the wavelength because it thinks you are already at the desired setting. At this point you are stuck and have to change to a different mask to clear it. It also died on us twice, once when changing the rotation, once when changing the exposure time. One other problem we had. Early on, we took some DIS images and found severe focus variations across the red image, but not the blue image. Some time later, we moved to a different target and this problem went away! At first we thought there was a collimation problem or that the chip was tilted, but the fact that it changes suggests that something in the optical path is shifting or flopping about. Could the imaging mirror on the red side be loose?"
