The observers were Eric Deutsch and Alan Diercks for UW04, Dan VandenBerk and Jean Quashnock for UC03, myself for PU01, and Paula Szkody for UW07. Dan Long was the observing specialist until 10 PM. His notes are as follows: "There were two instances tonight when the focus changed abruptly. Once while guiding Alan Diercks noticed the FWHM got significantly worse, then about 2 minutes later, it went back to the fantastic values seen earlier ( he was getting .77" FWHM in 10 minute exposures ). Alan's comments about focus getting worse then better followed two successive weather updates. I checked the temperatures given, but they were all within a tenth degree of their respective values for the previous 3 updates. The first shift happened at about 19:52 and the return happened at about 19:54 The second focus shift occurred while I was focusing GRIM at about 20:48. I had nearly settled on a focus value of zero, when the frame which was supposed to be a little beyond focus was way off. I kept decreasing the focus and eventually settled on -200. This time it didn't go back." My notes are as follows: *PU01 lost 12 minutes due to a problem mounting the DIS. It didn't want to seat properly on the mushroom support posts. I got it to go on after quite a few tries, but that used up the PU01 observing time. *We had a problem getting proper slit images at the beginning of UW07. The stars were faint and the slit wasn't visible. It turned out the slit mask wheel was in the open position, although it claimed to be in the long slit position. The slit camera was actually imaging stars off the back of the shutter, which is anodized! I was really surprised it could manage that. I'll have to investigate why the slit mask wheel wasn't in the correct position. The observing schedule was modified to allow for observations of GRB980329. The UW04 group observed in the visible with SPIcam and the UC03 group observed in the near infrared with GRIM2. OBSERVER COMMENTS Paula (UW07) - "I got 27 very nice spectra on my two objects tonight."
