The observers were Eric Deutsch for UW09, myself for PU01, and Alan Diercks for UW01. Focus was quite variable all night. Eric's program had no major problems aside from that. I lost some time due to fatal crashes of the new version of Remark I was testing (I've sent a message to Bob Loewenstein). Also, when I reverted to the older version I didn't check the default image settings, so I ended up taking only blue frames after that (sigh). Alan's program had trouble with internet connectivity/speed for a while. *Then the filter wheel appeared to get hung up. After that there was an odd intermittent light pattern on some images. I thought I had eliminated it by covering one of the rotator access holes, but it reappeared during early morning twilight. I checked the usual suspects - eyelid, baffle, filter wheel, shutter. All were fine, but I think maybe the filter wheel and shutter deserve a second look. Also there's the possibility the camera has developed a light leak. If I have time Monday afternoon, I'll look into this and the filter wheel. Maybe Dave Woods can help me check the shutter? This problem may have rendered Alan's images unsuitable for science. You may have noticed the schedule was shuffled. Alan asked if he could swap with PU01 for the last part of the night, so he could take advantage of the photometric sky and get a zero-point for the GRB observations taken in December. I hope that, despite the instrument problems, some of his data will be useful. OBSERVER COMMENTS Eric (UW09) - "Very good evening. Weather, network, telescope, instrument, guider, and slit viewer all worked flawlessly, although the telescope focus drifted 250 units over a few hours! My attempt to keep DIS in focus by keeping the guider in focus seemed to fail, too, as the relative focus of the guider and DIS must have changed as the night progressed; some time late in the evening, I noticed spectra were in poor focus, even though the guider images were still nice." Alan (UW01) - "I think we got a decent amount of data for calibrating several of our targets. Seeing was quite variable. thanks for your help, hopefully we can track down this weird light leak problem... thanks for swapping time as well. getting these flats will make a big difference" FOCUS LOG FEBRUARY 1 1997 Best Telescope Wind Seeing Time Inst Focus Az El #Temp Dir MPH filter FWHM " 18:50 DIS -250(5865) 200 63 -2.1/+0.6 318 14 none 1.2 18:55 guider 52700(5856) 203 63 -2.2/+0.4 308 11 R 1.2 23:00 DIS + 50(6055) 316 54 -2.3/-2.7 317 7 none 1.5 23:50 DIS 0(5960) 25 63 -2.3/-2.9 322 15 r 1.6 01:25 SPIcam -100(5803) 204 58 -2.5/-2.9 330 12 R 1.0 01:30 guider 50500(5804) 205 58 -2.5/-2.9 321 13 R 1.3 #The first temp is air, the second is truss, both in degrees Celsius WEATHER FEBRUARY 1 1997 Wind Time Temp F Dewp.
