This refocus attempt yielded dramatic improvements in the focus, although not perfect. According to Jim Gunn, the chip is vintage, very thin, and posses "waves" in the surface to a certain degree that prevent perfect focus across the whole surface. Even so, the chip now possesses an even line profile across the whole range with only a few minor deviations. According to Jim, the construction of the collimators allows for minor temperature flucuations but the major changes (i.e. summer-winter) need adjustment. This will become standard procedure twice a year or when needed. The dome opened this evening to another night of clear skies and dry air at 18:00 MST. Xiaohui mentioned the large improvement in focus while taking cals. Rosie began a bit early and although the seeing was quite turbulent, the skies remained photometric. The night was eventless and smooth. ----- OBSERVER COMMENTS ----- (*...)Annotations by NCH PU02 (Strauss/Fan): Tonight was great. The weather was clear, the seeing was decent, and the telescope and instrument behaved themselves very well. We were particularly pleased to see the effects of the recollimation of DIS; the spectra were in much better focus. Many thanks to Jim Gunn and Karen Gloria for doing this. We got loads of great data, thanks to the usual expert help from Camron Hastings. In particular, we have 4, and perhaps 5, new SDSS quasars.
