DIS was first on, as Dave Woods from here at APO and Bernadette Rogers from UW were taking more test data with the new brighter quartz lamps. She sent an email out dealing with the results, but they look good at 6-10 times more counts per second, though they are a bit hotter in the blue than the old bright lamps. The last test to run on these new lamps is GRIM in spectrograph mode and to check the heat output. I began the night discussing with Craig the new map data. We have an average map of the altitude drive to use in addition to the existing for the pointing models. First up was a new instrument block for the guider. I took more data points than usual and the changes from the old values were very small. Since DIS was already mounted, I decided to start that instrument block next. I measured the red chip and again the changes from old values were very small. I did notice that the last three versions of the DIS instrument block showed no changes since 1995. I thought this quite odd since I know we did blocks after recent DIS work this summer. I also noticed various values that looked incorrect, such as the chip center which I fixed to get a better fit on the boresight value. The oddest thing of all was the desire of the fitting program to flip the DIS block by 179.10 degrees. The image scale and orientation data was quite good, as was the fit, and I have no reason to mistrust this conclusion. It seems an error that we would be running for 3 years upside-down though, which is what it said we were doing... I began a pointing model at 22:30, though clouds interfered and we closed at 23:00. 2nd half observing specialist: Karen Gloria, Russet McMillan The telescope was closed for the remainder of the night due to clouds and high humidity. We remeasured the DIS instrument block data from Camron's images and corrected some mistakes. The data fit is improved, although another data set may be needed for the orientation. The old instrument block is currently active.
