Opening was delayed by clouds. Charles Corson was the observing specialist for the first half of the night. Jeff Morgan was the observer conducting engineering tests on the guider. Jeff conducted several tests, including open and closed loop guiding, closed loop guiding into the wind, and precision of very small telescope offsets. The macintosh for the guide camera hung once. This resulted in a brief down time. OBSERVER COMMENTS Jeff Morgan: "Its been a very good night overall. We have made some significant progress in understanding some of the operational problems with the current guider code. We have managed to complete 4 of 6 tests that we were hoping to get done. And we made one series of tests we did not originally think of (it came to me as we started off the night). Its clear that the guide code needs to be modified to alleviate its extreme sensitivity to drifts away from its expected centroid position. This is probably the cause of 90% of the failed centroid position error that we are currently getting."
