Both drives seem functional, and a small tune was done to the primary mirror support to remove an oscillation in the transverse support. On sky tests indicated a 1hz oscillation that was not in line with the elevation or azimuth axis. Inspection of the primary mirror support showed a small, but noticable 1hz oscillation in the transverse support. This was quickly tuned out, a very small adjustment, and the following, quick, on sky tests showed no image motion. At this point, the telescope was turned over to B. Rodgers for science. The seeing was excellent, but conditions did not hold as the dome was quickly closed due to threatening cloud cover. No useful data set was obtained. The sky cleared again for G. Magnier. Seeing was again excellent, in fact stupendous, 0.71arc-sec, H-band. This value was confirmed with several stars using a background subtracted image from GRIM. Gene was able to image one object before overcast conditions forced closing. Of concern was the apparent trailing, or possibly jerk, of the azimuth axis, two events. The events were transitory and I did not see other evidence of it occuring. Guider tests were performed. After careful focus, pointing corrections and guiding loops could all be performed with the new guider. (focus is essential for the centroiding to succeed; a new centroiding algorithm is in use) FOCUS LOG JULY 23, 1997 Best Telescope Wind Seeing Time Inst Focus Az El #Temp Dir MPH filter FWHM " 22:50 GRIM 200(6904) 125 80 15.3/16.4 354 5 J 0.85 01:30 GRIM 50 186 77 15.6/15.7 296 3 H 0.83 02:15 GRIM 0 (6683) 256 74 15.7/15.6 292 2 H 0.71 #The first temp is air, the second is truss, both in degrees Celsius WEATHER JULY 23, 1997 Wind Time Temp F Dewp.
