Jeff Morgan, Dan Long and I worked on setting up the GUIDER to take test images for the instrument block. We began the night obtaining a few reasonable images, but then quite a few strange happenings occurred. We started seeing incorrect images and kept losing the star from view. Dan tried to use Arcturus to point the telescope and align the instrument properly, but after finding an offset problem with both the Azimuth and Altitude axis, he chose to remap both. We also remapped the GUIDER numerous times during the evening to try to correct the problems we were incurring. We discovered that the filter position does not properly find its origin by using the command "0 (FILTER)", but if "REMAP" is used, it does. Note that until the controller is reprogrammed, the REMAP command cannot be used without manual supervision. Eventually, somehow a star stayed on the chip (none of us can explain how it mysteriously cooperated) and we got rough scale measurements for the GUIDER instrument block data. Alas, the problem with the star not staying on the chip returned, and we decided to hand the telescope over to Alan Diercks to work on Gamma Ray Burster observations. The telescope seemed to cooperate, and he obtained some information.
