The swap of the engCam with the old guideCam this afternoon made a huge improvement in evaluating images tonight. Thank you, Katie, for coming to site this afternoon! It's worth mentioning that this replacement (old guider) camera does show evidence of a few ice crystals having formed in the flat, so it will also probably need its desiccant replaced and then purged before it degrades along the same path as the previous engCam, per Cary. The optical collimation results look very good. The process tonight was: (1) start with the tilts derived last night; (2) apply additional tilts on-axis to improve collimation; (3) move 1-deg off-axis and take images at intra- and extra-focal locations at four rotator configuratios (0 obj, 90 obj, 180 obj, 270 obj); (4) iteratively apply tilt-translation M1 orient moves to try to improve astigmatism without introducing coma per Conor's supplied prescriptions; (5) when the donut looked better at a particular rotator configuration then move through the other cardinal angles and take images to compare the overall change in the off-axis donuts across the rotator sweep; (6) move back to on-axis images with the orientation derived from off-axis corrections to ensure on-axis still looks good; and (7) take focus sweeps. There were basically two M1 orientations "compared" after all the experimentation tonight: primOrient_1: 1.06, -32.92, 7.02, -410.86, -786.6 -- only includes tilts applied on-axis, but the off-axis donuts actually looked quite good (just like last year when we didn't need to make additional corrections after determining donuts in the FPS GFAs were good). primOrient_2: -1.06, -43.05, -8.77, -751.82, -556.2 -- includes additional corrections made off-axis and then re-checked on-axis. This orientation produced marginally better off-axis donuts overall (particularly in the +1000um defocused donuts) and slightly smaller FWHMs during focus sweeps. With primOrient_1 in place, the best FWHM at 1-deg off-axis was measured at 1.22" fwhm; on-axis it was <1" fwhm. With primOrient_2 in place, the best FWHM at 1-deg off-axis was measured at 1.16" fwhm; on-axis it was 0.94" fwhm. All that being said, default.dat has been updated with the primOrient_2 values: -43.05, -8.77, -751.82, -556.2 We will also likely quickly revisit looking at off-axis donuts when the FPS is mounted for completeness, but I don't think we can do any better than we did tonight with the engCam (which is not a slight against the engCam; the collimation results just look good). New NOMINAL mirror numbers saved. Notes ===== (1) Can we have the FPS mounted for tomorrow night? Since we use the FPS for pointing models there shouldn't be any reason to keep the engCam on going forward. (2) I had some trouble with the 180L LN2 autofill line connection this evening. Details in the Log. Basically, the collar came apart and the threaded male connector that leads up to the solenoid valve loosened, but I reassembled and tightened everything and didn't see any leaks upon completion. ---- Observing Log ---- EngCam swap and setup ********************* Katie came on site this afternoon and we swapped the old guideCam with the engCam and remounted the engineering camera onto the telescope. Edited the [alta] hostname FROM 10.25.1.71 TO 10.25.1.70 in /home/sdss5/software/gcameraICC/main/etc/ecamera.cfg after confirming 10.25.1.70 pings following the engCam swap of Apogee Alta cameras. Homed the engCam stage and made sure none of the wires or plumbing was caught in the motion since we had to remove and reinstall some of those hoses and connections during the swap. Took an engCam dark stack and some flats. A 45s flat results in ~34k counts in the raw image. LN2 Autofill connection troubles ******************************** Force-filled BOSS LN2 dewars so I could take some time to do another home/relax of the mirrors while the weather is unfit to open. I had trouble removing the 180L LN2 autofill line: At first the entire male threaded connection that the autofill line connects to began unscrewing when I tried loosening the connection at the normal location of the autofill line collar. I re-tightened everything then used a wrench around the male threaded connector and tried to loosen the autofill line while holding the male side secure, but then the collar just spun off the underlying female connector. I had to somewhat disassemble the autofill collar then reattach it. Once I got the autofill line off I tightened the male connector where it threads in just before the solenoid shutoff valve.
