The short answer is that ideally the auto-pilot mode should be able to be started at any point, but obviously that's not working seamlessly now, but if it does not work that's a bug and not something related to how the auto-pilot mode should work. The LCO observers have reported issues with this as well, including the fact that for them it seems that the auto-pilot mode always takes all the stages and calibrations for a new field. I assume this is not the same at APO? I'm looking into it; the main difficulty is how to decide when a design has been "observed". I recently changed that to mark a design as "completed" for auto-pilot purposes when the goto-field sequence has been successfully completed, but at least at LCO this has not solved the new-field vs repeat-field issue.
