NE truck was particularly angry tonight. Perhaps not being exercised last couple days or the cold weather. Difference from what I've heard before was that it was not clanking rhythmically. Investigations of this new noise/different behavior have found that a bearing has failed in the non drive wheel on the NE corner drive system of the building. Building should not be moved with this bearing failure as there is a risk of a catastrophic situation occurring that would prevent the building from being able to be moved. (the other wheel in the system is the drive wheel and that is the one that does the clunking that was worked on during shutdown) Telescope will be down tonight while repairs are planned and made the rest of today and tomorrow. We anticipate that repairs will be done in time to open tomorrow night, however, until the drive system is taken apart, the extent of the failure will not be known. Updates will be sent out as progress is made on the removal and repair of the failed bearing on the non drive wheel. - Jamey -- Jamey Eriksen Director, Research Division I Director of Operations, Apache Point Observatory 2001 Apache Point Rd.
