APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday September 09, 2023 (SJD 60197) ---- Observing Team ---- Dan Oravetz Dmitry Bizyaev (ROT fid max) Kaike Pan (fiducial tables) ---- Observing Plan ---- Shakedown tasks ---- Observing Summary ---- Clouds and radar tonight, so didn't get on sky. Changed the max ROT auto-correction for fiducials to 1500. Test slews and f= iducial corrections look as expected post-modification. Kaike built new fiducial tables and loaded them into the MCP as version 149= . Test slews post-installation completed fine. Collected additional ALT fiducial data for Kaike because the fitting errors= on the current set are three times larger than usual. ALT drive surfaces c= leaned in the process. It looked as though the BOSS collimator had been zeroed/centered recently b= ased on the numbers (?), but it was still in the science plan task list for= post-shutdown, so I did another home/zero/center and verified the full ran= ge of motion is available. Tried taking some lossy fiber exposures, but little/no flux in a 500s test = exposure. I also turned the source and shutter toggle switches to OFF on th= e lossy fiber setup since it's plugged into the engCam power strip - we're = using the engCam a lot lately and rather than having to secure another plug= that could fall out when slewing, toggling-off switches seemed the safer r= oute to not leaving the lossy fiber sources on when not in use. The alertsActor got into the recent messy state of throwing a bunch of 'ale= rts status' commands following reported camCheck alerts. Eventually there w= ere several false critical alerts triggered. I restarted alerts, but with a= ctive camCheck warnings the alerts gets into the messy state pretty quickly= again. There was an r1 CCDTemp critical alert. Here's the info from my reply to th= e critical-alerts email: This alert is real. The current r1 CCD temp is -122.3C (setpoint is -126.6), but the CCD temp has been fluctuating more than usual since yesterday (evidently enough to trigger an alert this time). When I was doing the test ROT slews this evening and the r1 camera slewed by I noticed its ion pump status LEDs were flashing. Grafana indicates that it had been holding at around logP=3D-5.7 on average, until yesterday when it jumped to -4.85 and has been staying there since then (with the accompanying flashing LEDs). The CCD temperature has been fluctuating in conjunction with this reported jump in the ion pump logP values. To be sure, there's LN2 in the can, the 10L LN2 pressure is 8 psi, and a primary and secondary fill both completed normally not long ago. ---- Observing Log ---- =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D AFTERNOON CHECKOUT =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D All systems alive and responsive, but no FPS right now because the engCam i= s mounted. We didn't have to restart MCP, the ./mcp_config utility worked fine. Test slews worked fine and fiducials are looking good using 1500. As a side note, there's an MCP command that can change the max fiducial correction that we could've used without editing the mcp_config.js file, but we were about two minutes too late in coming across it. The command would look like this: 'ROT MS_MAX 1500' and can be issued in, e.g., the command input section at the bottom of the MCP GUI Controls. For the record, here's the sequence that worked using ./mcp_config: As mcp@mcp: # Make a copy of the original file: cp mcp_config.js mcp_config_20230909_BACKUP.js # Tested the mcp_config utility: cd sdss/mcp_linux/src/ ./mcp_config -dry_run -config ~/mcp_config.js # The last few lines of output from the -dry_run: # max_fiducial_correction[0] =3D 600.000000 # max_fiducial_correction[1] =3D 600.000000 # max_fiducial_correction[2] =3D 600.000000 # min_encoder_mismatch_error[0] =3D 1000.000000 # min_encoder_mismatch_error[1] =3D 1000.000000 # min_encoder_mismatch_error[2] =3D 1000.000000 # dry run success cd # Change ROT value from 600 to 1500: vi mcp_config.js # Test with -dry_run that file is valid .js format after editing: cd sdss/mcp_linux/src/ ./mcp_config -dry_run -config ~/mcp_config.js # Load new config to global memory since -dry_run succeeded: ./mcp_config -config ~/mcp_config.js # Output from above command: "success loading config file to global memory" The msOnMaxCorrection keyword (one way to see this keyword is by issuing a 'mcp info' in STUI) reflects the change: 01:58:15 APO.doravetz 1 mcp i msOnMaxCorrection=3D600,600,1500 01:45Z - Started ventilation. I also turned the source and shutter toggle switches to OFF on th= e lossy fiber setup since it's plugged into the engCam power strip - we're = using the engCam a lot lately and rather than having to secure another plug that could fall out when slewing= , toggling-off switches seemed the safer route to not leaving the lossy fib= er sources on when not in use. The alertsActor got into the recent messy state of throwing a bunch of 'ale= rts status' commands following reported camCheck alerts. Eventually there w= ere several false critical alerts triggered. I restarted alerts, but with a= ctive camCheck warnings the alerts gets into the messy state pretty quickly again. ---- Observing Log ---- =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D &nb= sp; = AFTERNOON CHECKOUT =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D All systems alive and responsive, but no FPS right now because the engCam i= s mounted.
