I found the factor of 10 discrepancy in my prediction of counts. I had mis= takenly read in my logbook that we observed 1000 cts in 1 read back in late= June for comparable power at the FPI with an ND1 filter installed. Hence = my prediction of 10,000 cts in 1 read without the filter. In fact what I h= ad written was 1000 cts in 10 reads. We restarted the humid and optidew processes and that fixed the problem (even though those processes were reportedly already running). *********************** Telescope Balance Check *********************** A few nights ago we adjusted the telescope counterweights (from ~400 to ~36= 0) to improve the balance, but the balance was still not quite what we're accusto= med to seeing. At stow, for example, when an E-stop would be pressed before the= ALT brake was set, the telescope would drop by about half a degree as it was to= p-heavy. With the counterweights set to 330 (as indicated on the lower-enclosure cha= ssis when the selector dial was pointing to one of the four counterweights), the balance at stow was perfect - press an E-stop while tracking and the telesc= ope didn't budge in ALT before the brake engaged. Unfortunately, when the teles= cope was at zenith using this counterweight setting the telescope would fall hal= f a degree past zenith when an E-stop was pressed. We tested counterweight values at several places between 330 to ~350 and we confirmed that it's impossible to be balanced well at both stow and zenith = by moving all four counterweights in tandem. When the telescope gets to higher= ALT angles, it seems there's more weight on the west side (where the FVC is loc= ated) than the east side because the telescope wants to fall to angles greater than 90. The ALT voltage holds about -3500 (as indicated in the MCP/TPM GUI= ) when at zenith because the motor needs to push the telescope in a downward direction (towards smaller ALT angles) in order to counteract the tendency = for the telescope to want to fall back past zenith. When we spoke to Ryan yesterday he mentioned they're still working on adjus= ting the weight plates and trim weights on the telescope, but for now we settled= on a counterweight setting of 340 (as indicated on the lower-enclosure chassis w= hen the selector dial was pointing to one of the four counterweights). This res= ults in the telescope being in a better balance at stow than it had been, but it= 's slightly bottom heavy at higher ALT angles, so it has a tendency to want to= fall toward higher ALT angles if, for some reason, the power were lost and the A= LT brake weren't engaged. Once the weight plates/trim weights are finalized we= can try to optimize the balance again and it might be interesting to experiment= with adjusting counterweights to values independent of one another. ****************** Home/Relax Mirrors ****************** ------- Primary ------- desOrient=3D0.00,-59.30,-8.75,-512.73,1906.51 encMount=3D12500.00,-1600.00,5350.00,47050.00,-8800.00,-8400.00 home E,F: "position error", "999999999, 999999999, 999999999, 999999999, 000000000, 000000000" home D: "position error", "999999999, 999999999, 999999999, 000000000, 999999999, 999999999" home A,B,C: "position error", "000000000, -000000050, 000000000, 999999999, 999999999, 999999999" Completed 'relax' process.
