Subject: 2.5m obslog 20210822 (SJD 59449) From: doravetz@apo.nmsu.edu Date: Mon, 23 Aug 2021 10:09:20 +0000 (UTC) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday August 22, 2021 (SJD 59449) ---- Observing Team ---- Katie Grabowski Dan Oravetz Ryan Wagner (rotator work) ---- Observing Plan ---- Finish updating engCam instrument block and then pointing model. ---- Observing Summary ---- Mostly clear while we were open with seeing ~1.1-1.3" FWHM as measured by engCam, but we closed at 06:00Z because of high humidity (90% RH). We finished updating the engCam instrument-block file after getting the ring data. We got ~1/3rd the way through a 155-point pointing model when we were forced to close for humidity. The 50 pointings we did get were still useful even though the distribution of pointing data was somewhat limited in the NW and SE. The skyRMS for the old pointing model was 93 arcsec (including an outlier that was later removed). With the 50-point subset taken tonight we installed a new pointing model with skyRMS of 2.4 arcsec after removing one outlier. There was a big change in the IE coefficient (elevation index error), which is not unexpected given the much-improved M1 mount/collimation this year as opposed to the large tilts (especially M1 Y_tilt) last year. Notes ===== (1) No OCLs or amp problems with the rotator tonight. (2) All of the M1, M2, and Telescope temperature sensor data are reporting 0.00. Did we inadvertently disconnect the temperature sensor data as a result of swapping fiber connections the other night when we were trying to get the engCam talking over the network? (3) Even though we're only taking cals and not piling up APOGEE images, there is an icsDiskAlarm warning, just FYI: APOGEE disk warning ~500GB ---- Observing Log ---- ============================================================================ AFTERNOON CHECKOUT ============================================================================ Ryan and Dan swapped the rotator Glentek module. The voltages show normally now, and the amp seems to be working ok, but the "A" in the MCP window will not clear. Resetting the rotator amp will clear the "A" in the MCP window, but has to be done every time a stop button is pushed. 23:36Z-Started APOGEE cals. Checked fiducials- accepted az and rot fiducials. Some radar and clouds, but humidity ok ============================================================================ NIGHT ============================================================================ 02:41:08 - Opened. Clear. Humidity is trending lower and at acceptable levels to open. We finished the instrument block grid data last night and updated the engCam instrument block file accordingly, so tonight we'll do the ring data first, update the file, then proceed to the pointing data. ************************** Instrument Block Ring Data ************************** First try ========= Best focus is 0um, corresponding to ~1.3" FWHM. All offsets are zero, including boresight offsets. The data-taking started with gimg-0038. Updated the instrument block file with new Rot_Inst_xy values. The desired center and fit center were several hundred pixels different in X (but the ring data fit was good, no weird data). The ring data fit is also much less elliptical compared to the data taken at the end of July. We decided to take another set of ring data after updating the instrument block file just to verify given the relatively large difference between fit center and desired center. Second try ========== Best focus is 0um, still corresponding to ~1.3" FWHM. All offsets are zero, including boresight offsets. The data-taking started with gimg-0073. We checked the Rot_Inst_xy values of the new data set and they match what the previous data set suggested for the fit center. Now, of course, the fit center and desired center are in excellent agreement since we had updated the instrument block file after the first try at ring data. The telescope altitude is ~75 degrees and the larger tracking errors are evident as seen in the measured (X,Y) centroids of the first and last data points - several tens of pixels difference, primarily in Y, between the first Rot 0 Obj data point and the last two points at Rot 360 Obj and Rot 0 Obj. The Rot_Inst_xy values were very similar to the values obtained after the first set of data, but since the tracking errors were larger during this data set we opted NOT to udpate the instrument block file after this set of ring data and instead used it only for comparative purposes with the first set (the first set had an overall better distribution and at lower ALT seemed to have better tracking). We proceeded to pointing data collection. ************** Pointing Model ************** M2 focus is 0um. Seeing ~1.1" FWHM. Mostly clear, but more clouds on the way. After updating the instrument block file for the engCam, we actually have the target star on the right side chip without offsets, so we were able to start the pointing data script without the need to include an initial calib offset for the first pointing. 04:38Z - Started 155-point pointing-model data collection with gimg-0105.fits. 06:00Z - Closed due to high humidity. We completed 50 of the 155 pointings.
